With the seventh pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, the Bruins could bet on Roger McQueen, a towering two-way center who brings size, grit, and untapped offensive upside.
It’s not often the Boston Bruins head to the NHL Draft with a top-10 selection in hand. But this year, they’re sitting at No. 7, and the pressure is on.
With the team’s core aging and the prospect pool looking shallow, this pick isn’t just important, it’s pivotal. Boston needs a hit. And according to The Athletic’s Corey Pronman, they could be eyeing Roger McQueen.
At 6-foot-5, McQueen already looks the part of an NHL center.
He’s got the size teams crave down the middle, but it’s his feel for the game that keeps scouts watching. He plays a structured, heavy game. He defends well. He can finish in tight. There’s still some rawness to his game, but the foundation is strong.
Before getting injured, McQueen posted 10 goals and 20 points in just 17 games with the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings. He also had a +8 rating and logged 40 penalty minutes, a snapshot of his physical edge and willingness to engage.
Now, the obvious concern: McQueen missed most of the season with a back injury. That’s a red flag, especially for a big-bodied player who leans on his physicality. Teams will want to dig deep on his medicals before taking the leap.
But that uncertainty might also be why he’s available at No. 7 in the first place.
Boston hasn’t confirmed anything — and other names are very much in play. Jake O’Brien and Porter Martone have both been mentioned as safer, more polished options. But McQueen? He’s got the upside. And if Boston believes he’s healthy, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them make the call.
He fits the Bruins’ identity, big, smart, tough, and the kind of player who could be a long-term solution down the middle.
There’s no room for error. Boston hasn’t had many first-rounders in recent years, and the ones they’ve used haven’t always panned out. This year, they need to get it right.
If Roger McQueen becomes the pick, the Bruins are betting on potential. On size. On strength. On a full recovery, and the hope that this is the start of something bigger.
