Dans Locmelis had another good showing in international play with Latvia in the Winter Olympics. Unfortunately, the fourth-round draft pick of the Boston Bruins in 2022 will not return to the AHL’s Providence Bruins this season as the forward will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery soon.
According to Mark Divver of the New England Hockey Journal, Locmelis has been dealing with the injury for a while and has opted to have surgery. The timeline for a return is six months. Locmelis should be ready to return for the 2026-27 season.
Locmelis was having a solid season in Providence with 15 goals and 13 assists in 43 games. The 6-foot, 180-pound center scored two goals for Latvia in the Olympics.
The forward spent two seasons at UMass-Amherst. Locmelis registered 15 goals and 32 assists during his time with the Minutemen. Locmelis’ play in the World Championship in 2025 stood out and drew praise from Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.
Locmelis is currently third on the Bruins Benders Podcast Top 30 Bruins Prospects list and will be an intriguing player during training camp in September. Boston has had great contributions from young center Fraser Minten, and Locmelis could fight for a spot on the Bruins early next season.
