Boston Bruins prospect Will Zellers’ freshman season at North Dakota ended on Thursday with a 2-1 loss to Wisconsin in the Frozen Four. Zellers registered 18 goals and 16 assists in 38 games, which placed him second on the team in goals and fourth in points. The former USHL Forward of the Year led the Fighting Hawks with six game-winning goals, 122 shots on goal, and seven power play goals.
Zellers was acquired by Boston in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche that included Charlie Coyle last March. The Maple Grove, Minnesota native finished a solid hockey season where he totaled eight points with Team USA in the World Junior Championships. At 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, Zellers has skill and speed and creates space for teammates. The 20-year-old played with current Boston Bruins top prospect James Hagens in the tournament.
In the national semifinal loss to Wisconsin, Zellers tallied two shots on goal and one blocked shot. With the season completed, it is likely that Zellers will stay at North Dakota for his sophomore season. Another Bruins prospect, Cooper Simpson, has committed to the Fighting Hawks as well.
