The Boston Bruins signed goalie Max Lundgren to a one-year, entry-level contract for the 2026-27 season on Sunday. Lundgren, who guided Merrimack College to a Hockey East Championship and an NCAA tournament berth, carries a salary cap hit of $952,500 at the NHL level.
The six-foot-five Swedish goaltender posted a 21-16-5 record for the Warriors this season while registering a .920 save percentage and 2.55 goals against average. These numbers were improved over his 2024-25 season as a freshman. Lundgren will turn 24 years old in April and will report to the Providence Bruins for the rest of the season.
Lundgren went undrafted following his only season in the USHL with the Des Moines Buccaneers, where he compiled a .913 save percentage and 2.65 goals against over 41 contests.
The addition of Lundgren will add to Boston’s organizational depth between the pipes next season. Starter Jeremy Swayman and backup Joonas Korpisalo are both under contract for next season. At the minor league level, Luke Cavallin and Simon Zajicek are both slated to be restricted free agents with arbitration rights, while Michael DiPietro is under contract for one more season with the Providence Bruins. DiPietro could be a candidate for Boston’s backup if the team decides to move on from Korpisalo in the offseason.

Another goalie prospect in the Bruins organization has finished his senior season at Providence College and is available to sign with the Bruins. However, with the signing of Lundgren, Philip Svedeback might not be in the Bruins’ plans going forward. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound netminder has until August 15 to sign with Boston or he will become a free agent. The 2021 fourth-round draft pick was injured for a portion of the Friars’ season but did post 2.32 goals against average with a .918 save percentage in 18 games. Svedeback finished his four-year collegiate career with 113 games played, a 54-38-17-5 record, a .908 save percentage, and a 2.30 goals against average.
With Swayman under contract for six more seasons and Korpisalo with one year left on his deal, it will be hard to find time as a starter or a backup with the Boston Bruins. However, the Bruins do have some goaltending depth that has propelled the Providence Bruins to one of the top teams in the AHL.
