Former Oilers fan favorite Ryan Jones stirred things up on social media after sharing a bold take about Edmonton and its hockey culture. Jones appeared on Oilersnation Everyday on Friday and looked back on his time with the Oilers, offering some honest thoughts about the city and his playing days.
Jones played in Edmonton from the 2009-10 to the 2013-14 seasons. Those years were not exactly smooth sailing for the franchise, but Jones said the struggles actually brought players closer together. According to him, the teams had skill, but things just never came together the right way to turn it into consistent wins.
“Some of the struggles brought us together even more because we were all in it together,” Jones said. “Whatever mix of players that we had there during those times, it wasn’t the right mix, you know, or else we would have won a lot more games.”
He made it clear that the lack of success was not about individual talent.
“It’s not that there wasn’t a whole lot of skill on that team,” Jones said. “It’s just that, for whatever reason, it just didn’t gel into a winning team.”
Jones then delivered the line that really caught attention online. Speaking passionately about the city, he made it clear where he stands.
“I wish we would want a lot more, uh, hockey games just because there’s no better City in the game of hockey to be a winning team than Edmonton,” Jones added. “So if anyone wants to argue about that. I am all in.”
That clip quickly made the rounds on social media, and it did not take long for Brad Marchand to jump into the conversation. The Florida Panthers forward responded with a hilarious comment.
“What you smoking boi,” Marchand wrote.
Marchand, of course, has recent bragging rights. The former Boston Bruins captain won his second Stanley Cup last season, his first with the Florida Panthers. The Eastern Conference giants beat the Oilers in back-to-back seasons to claim consecutive championships, which only made his comment sting a little more for Edmonton fans.
While Jones has long been retired from the game, Marchand remains an important part of the Panthers’ roster as they look to turn things around after a slow start this season.
