Brad Marchand came to Florida with one goal in mind, chase a Stanley Cup.
He nearly got it, and for a while, it sounded like he’d be sticking around. But in a sudden twist, that no longer appears to be the safe bet.
Despite making it known that he wanted to stay in Sunrise, the 36-year-old winger may be on his way out.
Sources around the league say talks between Brad Marchand and the Panthers have cooled, and if they can’t work something out soon, another team is ready to pounce.
That team? The Vegas Golden Knights.
Florida’s cap situation is tight, and with several key contracts already locked in, bringing Marchand back may not be realistic.
That’s opened the door for other contenders, and there’s no shortage of interest.
If, however, talks fall apart and Marchand explores alternative options, he will have the pick of the Cup contending litter, as clubs like Toronto, Los Angeles, Washington, Carolina, Vegas and others will pursue him.
That insight comes from The Fourth Period, which also suggested Vegas is the most likely destination if Marchand becomes available.
Vegas has made a habit of bold offseason moves. They’ve already been linked to Mitch Marner, and now Marchand’s name has entered the conversation. It’s unlikely they land both without shaking up their roster, but Marchand alone would be a major get.
The former Boston Bruins captain didn’t light it up in the regular season with Florida, just 4 points in 10 games, but that changed in the playoffs. He stepped up when it mattered most, finishing the postseason with 10 goals and 10 assists in 23 games.
He proved, once again, that experience matters in the playoffs.
That’s exactly what makes him so valuable to teams like Vegas, who are constantly eyeing another deep run.
Florida still has time to figure things out. But the longer this drags on, the clearer it becomes: Brad Marchand might be wearing different colors next season, and black and gold may not mean Boston anymore.
