Brady Tkachuk sure had himself an eventful night.
The Ottawa Senators captain was given a two-minute minor for slashing Beck Malenstyn in the first period. On first glance, there’s nothing wild about that — Tkachuk likes to play on the edge.
What was unusual, however, was that Tkachuk was still on the bench when he tangled with the Buffalo Sabres winger.
Tkachuk, while sitting near the middle of the bench, moved the butt-end of his stick and caught Malenstyn in the face, with an official witnessing the event just a few feet away.
Tkachuk was handed a two-minute minor on the play, and would later take a second trip to the box after getting into a fight with Sabres defenseman Logan Stanley, giving him seven penalty minutes in the opening period of play.

The game was scoreless at the time, before Mattias Samuelsson beat Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen at 28:49 with a wrister. Dylan Cozens would answer back at 15:18, tipping in a shot from none other than Tkachuk.
Tkachuk, 26, is in his eighth NHL season with the Sens. After his assist on Thursday, Tkachuk improved to 20 goals and 32 assists for 52 points in 55 games. Tkachuk also helped the United States win gold at 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, marking the team’s first gold since 1980.
Tkachuk has 211 goals and 245 assists for 456 points in 567 games over his career.
