The Seattle Kraken announced that defenseman Brandon Montour would not return as he sustained a lower-body injury.

Three minutes into the second period of the Kraken’s contest against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Montour was carrying the puck, knifing his way through the neutral zone. As he reached the Bolts’ blue line, his right foot connected with Nikita Kucherov’s stick, which resulted in an awkward fall as he glided into his team’s bench while Tampa went the other way. That was his last shift, totaling just 8:05 of ice time up to that point.

The Kraken Hockey Network also noted that Montour was missing from the bench for a certain period of time. Checking back on the NHL’s shift report, this absence came between the 8 and 12 minute mark of the first period. There wasn’t anything definitive regarding the reason behind that, but he managed to return and continue his play before the second-period infraction.

It’s clear which area of Montour was affected, and any kind of missed time will hurt this Seattle squad. While yet to register a goal this season, he has already dished out five assists in eight games, playing as much as 30 minutes of ice time. No doubt that his presence is felt when in the game. Montour has led all Kraken defensemen with a 50% Corsi-For, emphasizing his ability to possess the puck with a Relative Expected Goals% of 5.9, also team leading. The organization also granted Montour the honor of wearing an ‘A’ this season, emphasizing his impact and experience that he brings to the NHL’s 32nd franchise.

This marks his third season in Seattle after signing a seven-year contract worth $50MM in free agency following back-to-back Eastern Conference championships, winning the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in 2023-24. He set a career high with 18 goals in his first season with the Kraken and has twice matched the team’s single-game scoring record for a defenseman with four points, both against the Montreal Canadiens. Montour has 78 points in 153 career games with the Kraken, 6th on the team since signing in 2024-25.

Montour was limited to 64 games last season with a broken hand that sidelined him for weeks in early 2026, and he suffered a tragic loss when his brother passed away, having taken a leave of absence in late October of 2025.

The Kraken will hope that whatever has ailed Montour from that play is not severe. Currently sitting third in the Pacific Division, Seattle is looking to trend upwards from its past three campaigns of finishing below a .500 points percentage, well off from the 46-win season that saw it dismantle the ever-star-powered Colorado Avalanche in a shocking first-round upset back in the 2022-23 season.
