Brandon Tanev Signs With New Western Conference Team

The Utah Mammoth have just made one of their first ever free agent signings as NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported their deal with former Winnipeg Jets forward Brandon Tanev.

The first couple of hours of NHL free agency have been surprisingly slow this year, perhaps due to the fact that the league is cracking down on tampering.

Whatever the reason though, things are slowly seeming to pick up although most of the signings so far have been depth players.

That trend continued as the Utah Mammoth have reportedly come to an agreement with free agent forward Brandon Tanev, per NHL insider Frank Seravalli.

The 33-year-old veteran signed a three-year deal with an average annual value of 2.5 million dollars.

This is a respectable deal for Tanev, and for the Mammoth is presents little risk as they could easily trade him in the future if necessary.

Last season, Tanev put up 10 goals and 22 points in 79 games split between the Seattle Kraken and Winnipeg Jets.

To this point in his career he has appeared in 552 regular-season NHL games, potting 84 goals and 180 points in the process.

Tanev might not be the only former Jet to sign with Utah this summer as the team is also reportedly in on Nikolaj Ehlers.

At this point in time, Ehlers is the biggest-name free agent still available and could be set to cash in as teams become desperate to add top-six forward talent, with few other options still available.

If the Mammoth are interested in him though, they will have a lot of competition as the Lightning, Hurricanes, and Capitals are all teams that are reportedly interested in signing the 29-year-old Dane.

Ehlers had 24 goals and 63 points in 69 games this season for the Jets.

If he can replicate that production going forward, he would be a major addition to any team, and Utah could certainly use another scorer in their top six.
