Just when it looked like the St. Louis Blues had gotten their groove back after bouncing back from a season-opening loss to the Minnesota Wild with back-to-back road wins over the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks, Brayden Schenn and company hit a brick wall on Wednesday in the form of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Defense was a big issue in the Blues' defeat at the hands of Chicago at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, with the Blackhawks coming away with an 8-3 win. The Blues were able to keep in step with their visitors in the first period, which ended with the score tied at 2-2. But it was all downhill from there for St. Louis, as the Blackhawks scored six of the next seven goals in the contest.
The Blues started Joel Hofer between the pipes, but was later replaced by Jordan Binnington after giving up four goals. Binnington didn't do great in front of the net either, as he gave up a goal on seven shots faced before Hofer re-entered the game. Overall, Hofer allowed seven goals on 22 shots faced.
Despite the rough night from the Blues’ netminders, the team's captain is keeping his confidence in them.
“I don’t think we’re worried about our goaltenders at all,” Schenn said after the game, per Lou Korac of NHL.com.
“We have two of the best goalies in the League and a great tandem. If you want to talk about the goals, let’s maybe talk about the team and how we’re giving up odd-man rushes and point-blank chances. You can talk about the goals all you want, but I think we’re not doing a good enough job in front of them. It’s just that simple.”
There wasn't a big difference in the possession battle between the two teams, as the Blackhawks barely edged St. Louis in shots on goal, 29-26. Chicago simply got better play from their goalie, as Arvid Soderblom stopped 23 of 26 shots, while helping the Blackhawks kill off two Blues power plays.
The Blues dropped to 2-2-0 and will look to rebound from the loss this Saturday, when they host the Dallas Stars.
