Max Domi of the Toronto Maple Leafs is questionable heading into next season following complications of an offseason surgery. Domi is listed as out indefinitely according to the press release by the Maple Leafs on Monday morning. He will be reevaluated heading into training camp.

Domi played the 2025-26 season with an undisclosed injury that obviously affected his performance as he registered 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points in 80 games this season. He was also a minus-29 on the season, which was the worst mark of his 11-year NHL career.

Domi received a lot of criticism for his poor play throughout the season. Neither Toronto nor Domi has said publicly when the injury happened. No injury status was given during the course of the season. The 31-year-old was a healthy scratch in late November and early December. Whether or not that had something to do with his injury remains unknown.

There were times during the season when Domi was a strong contributor for the Maple Leafs. When the team was trying to turn its season around in late December and into January. However, Toronto’s season was beyond saving.

Domi Being Sidelined Could Help Maple Leafs

Toronto has Domi under contract through the 2027-28 season with an annual average value of $3.75 million. With all the changes in management and a new head coach incoming, there are lots of questions surrounding the Maple Leafs. The future of every player is considered unknown as Toronto GM John Chayka seeks a new direction.

However, for Domi, it seems highly unlikely he will be moved this offseason. For one, there is his relationship with the new Senior Advisor, Mats Sundin. Sundin and Max’s dad, Tie Domi, were teammates for many seasons in Toronto. Secondly, Domi’s current injury could become useful if placed on LTIR to start the season. Having his $3.5 million cap hit on LTIR could allow Chayka to add more than he thought he could this offseason.
