Bruins Defenseman Walks Away From the NHL and Signs Overseas

Boston Bruins defenseman Daniil Misyul, who was acquired from the Devils earlier in the season, has decided to leave the NHL and head overseas to play.

The Boston Bruins picked up New Jersey Devils defenseman Daniil Misyul at the 2025 NHL trade deadline in a trade that sent forward Marc McLaughlin in the opposite direction. A few months into the offseason, Misyul is heading over to Europe.

Boston still has a chance to keep his rights if they issue a qualifying offer

KHL side Lokomotiv Yaroslavl signed the 23-year-old to a one-year contract for the 2025-26 season. Despite the transfer, the Bruins remain able to keep his NHL rights by issuing him a qualifying offer by June 30.

That would maintain Boston's rights over Misyul until the end of the 2027-28 season in the event that he returned to North America.

After the trade, Misyul finished the 2024-25 season with Boston's AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins. In 11 regular-season games, the 6-foot-3 defenseman had one goal, 27 penalty minutes, and a minus-2 mark.

He played in five playoff games for Providence and had one assist and four penalty minutes. Misyul's exit won't make an immediate difference to Boston's NHL roster but does deprive Providence of defensive depth.

Whether the Bruins make the qualifying offer with the aim of keeping his NHL rights is as yet unclear, but that would give them a low-risk insurance policy further down the road if he tries to come back.
