This afternoon the Boston Bruins shared that forward Michael Eyssimont has been placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to AHL Providence.
The news suggests that Matthew Poitras could be gearing up for a return as soon as tomorrow against Ottawa after starting the year out on injured reserve. While Boston intends for Eyssimont to be assigned, the winger hasn’t skated in the AHL since 2022-23, managing 249 NHL games since then between the Sharks, Lightning, Kraken, and Bruins. Leaving Seattle, he received a two-year deal as a free agent in 2025, playing in 56 games for the B’s with 18 points as an energy bottom-sixer with 54 hits. The Littleton, Colorado native has a respectable track record, playing in 81 games with the 45-win Lightning three years ago with 11 goals and 25 points, and sought out by the Bruins as a multi-year free agent addition. Eyssimont was off to a solid start in Boston but by the end of the season he was more of a rotational piece, getting into two of their six playoff games against Buffalo but not recording any stats.
A former fifth round selection of the Kings (2016), Eyssimont does not kill penalties, more likely to end up in the box himself from mixing it up as an agitator. Teams haven’t been shy to start his shifts in his own end, with five-on-five defensive zone starts of nearly 58% last season. Eyssimont is frequently listed as a center, capable of hopping in for a draw here or there, but otherwise never spending any significant time as a pivot at the NHL level and instead serving as a versatile winger who shoots left.
With Tanner Jeannot and Mark Kastelic on their fourth line filling the always needed Boston bruising roles, and exciting youngsters Poitras as well as James Hagens ready to establish themselves in the lineup, there just isn’t a spot for Eyssimont at the time being. He would be a strong addition for Providence, if he can get there, likely to get another call-up later on depending on injuries. At a reasonable, although slightly higher than ideal $1.45MM cap hit which expires this summer it wouldn’t be a shock to see a claim for any team wanting a serviceable fourth-liner with a high motor and simplified offensive game. Depending on what happens in the next 24 hours, the Bruins will have around $7.5MM in cap space to work with.
