The Boston Bruins continue to search for a way to get back to the top of the mountain. After years of strong contention, things have finally fallen off for one of the more iconic teams in the NHL.
But as Boston tries to build itself back up, the team could have its eyes set on next offseason. Multiple All-Star players are expected to be free agents next summer, with Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid being the biggest.
McDavid is entering the final year of his deal with the Oilers, and there has been some thought of him potentially leaving. If McDavid does decide to leave the Oilers, the Bruins would make a lot of sense as a landing spot.
NHL writer Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report put together some potential landing spots for the Oilers star. Within the list, Boston was named, and the pairing could take place next summer.
"To be more than what they were this past season and more than what their roster figures to look like this upcoming season, they'll need a game-changing No. 1 center.
"That has been their biggest need since Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci retired, and the likes of Casey Mittelstadt, Pavel Zacha and Elias Lindholm are not going to satisfy it. McDavid obviously would. The Bruins are in a big market and are an Original Six franchise that still has eyes on winning," Gretz wrote.
McDavid landing in Boston would be special and could instantly bring the Bruins back to a level of contention. Boston is a great city for hockey, and McDavid would help bring back the tradition that the organization has set for years.
The scoring punch that McDavid brings would be electric in the city, and the fans would quickly rally around him. But the Bruins would need to make sure that they have enough money to spend to go after his services.
Everything remains to be seen, but the Bruins would be a solid landing spot for McDavid. Boston could make a compelling arguement to land him, but for now, McDavid is determined to help Edmonton get over the hump.
