Welcome back to The Win Column Calgary Flames Prospect Rankings. We begin the countdown with right-shot defenceman Henry Mews. The 19-year-old was drafted 74th overall by the Flames in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. He finishes 10th on this year’s rankings, ending in the same standing as last year’s rankings.
Position | Year Drafted | Highest Ranking | Lowest Ranking | 2024 Ranking |

Having a surplus of right-handed defencemen is one of the best problems a team can have. As for Mews, he joins a prospect pool consisting of Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz. Assuming everything goes to plan, the Flames’ right side is arguably set. It also means more competition and the chance for kids in the system to stand out compared to the rest.
Season | Team | GP | G | A | P |
2023-24 | Ottawa 67’s | 65 | 15 | 46 | 61 |
2024-25 | Ottawa 67’s | 38 | 11 | 39 | 50 |
2024-25 | Subury Wolves | 30 | 3 | 29 | 32 |
Having a career season in the OHL this year, Mews has truly established himself as a strong two-way defenceman. Mews’ talent arguably should’ve made him a late-first to second-round pick. The fact that the Flames snagged him in the third round shows that the scouting staff did their homework.
Regarding development, Mews will be leaving the OHL as he’ll be committing to the University of Michigan for the 2025-26 season.
Going to the NCAA will take Mews’ development to another level. His offensive ceiling is high, as he’s already been showing large growth in the OHL. His talent suggests that Mews can very well become a top-four defenceman in the NHL. Mews’ strongest attributes are his offensive game, polished skating and having an overall competitive attitude worthy of pro hockey.
As for weaknesses, there aren’t a whole lot regarding Mews, but his defensive game does need some work. This is a common thing many young defencemen struggle with, and improvement comes with development. He has good size, being 6’1” and 183 lbs. If Mews can work on his defensive game and overall consistency in higher levels of hockey, the potential he carries is huge.
The Flames’ 2024 draft has the possibility to keep on giving. As for Mews, the sky is the limit for him. In a 2024 redraft, Mews is going higher, likely in the second or even late first round.
College will be a huge test for him. Playing against more mature individuals will only challenge Mews and what he brings to the table. Many Flames prospects are going to college next season, so NCAA hockey is something Flames fans should keep a close eye on.
I have no reason to believe that Mews can’t be a regular in the NHL. Assuming he takes big strides over these next few years, Mews may be an NHL call-up sooner rather than later.
