The Calgary Flames have made three more cuts to their training camp roster, placing three players on waivers for the purpose of being assigned to the Calgary Wranglers. Forward Rory Kerins, defenceman Ilya Solovyov, and goalie Ivan Prosvetov have all been placed on waivers.

The Flames’ lineup is starting to become clearer with these three moves. The Flames have opted to keep Devin Cooley in the net over newly acquired Prosvetov, with the Russian likely becoming the starting goalie for the Wranglers. This is a surprise move, with the Flames likely expecting him to start in the NHL.
On the blueline, Solovyov was very good in camp, but the numbers suggested that the Flames would have a hard time keeping him in the NHL to start the year. Jake Bean and Daniil Miromanov both remain with the big club for the time being. This is not the end for the Belarusian, who should see NHL action this season.
The biggest shame was the waiving of Rory Kerins. The centreman was excellent for the Flames throughout the preseason, but with the amount of depth they have at centre, the decision was made to give him more playing time in the AHL over limited NHL minutes. This decision is puzzling, as the Flames have a question mark on their fourth line, with Martin Pospisil likely taking the centre role. He has not been great throughout camp and has played on the wing at times during the preseason.
Kerins is likely to find his way back to the NHL, but it would require space opening up down the middle. Coach Ryan Huska said that he and the coaching staff see Kerins as a top-nine centreman, which bodes well for his future. However, it is hard to see any of their current top-nine centremen moving on this season.
It is hard to see any of the three players being claimed on waivers, as none have any real NHL experience, and most teams have similar tweener players in their own lineups. Expect all three to report to the Wrangers and play big roles for the AHL side.
After making major cuts earlier in the week, the Flames are nearly at their roster to start the season. Their two goalies are set, but they are currently carrying eight defencemen and 14 forwards. Expect at least one more cut before the season opens.
The team has just one more preseason game taking place on Friday evening, when they entertain the Winnipeg Jets. Puck drop is at seven pm, where Dustin Wolf is expected to start.
