Calgary Flames officially set franchise record for worst start in team history

The Calgary Flames’ 2025–26 season has gone from bad to worse after yet another loss last night. By dropping their sixth straight game, the Flames’ record now sits at 1–6 on the season. After seven games, that is officially the worst start in franchise history since the team moved to Calgary in 1980. 45 years of Flames hockey, and this team stands alone for all the wrong reasons.

Still looking for their second win

A couple of days back, we looked at how the Flames had equalled their worst start in franchise history with just two points in their first six games. At that time, they were tied with both the 1997–98 and 2015–16 seasons. With that said, in both of those seasons, the Flames ended up winning their seventh game of the season, jumping to above two points.

This time around, however, the Flames dropped their seventh game and still remain at just two points on the year after seven games played. No team in franchise history has only had two points after the first seven games of the season, until now.

What’s gone wrong?

So what has led to the worst start in 45 years of Flames hockey? Well, for one, the Flames have scored just 11 goals through seven games, representing a dreadful 1.57 goals per game on the year. In four of their seven games, they’ve managed just one goal. They’ve yet to hit four goals in open play in any game this season.

Defensively, they’ve allowed 27 goals, which is the second-worst total in the league at the moment. In other words, the team can’t score, and they can’t keep the puck out of their net.

It won’t get any easier

Unfortunately for the Flames, they won’t be getting any breaks in their schedule anytime soon. Here’s the team’s upcoming schedule:

  • Home vs MTL (5–2)
  • @WPG (5–1)
  • Home vs NYR (3–4–1)
  • @TOR (3–2–1)

The Flames will have to go against two of the top teams in the league over their next two games in Montreal and Winnipeg. After that, they get a bit of a break with New York and Toronto, but neither team should be considered an easy matchup. There’s a very realistic scenario where this team could have one win after their first 11 games and sit at 1–10 by next week.
