Calgary Flames Prospect Roundup: Unexpected developments

With the Calgary Flames continuing their downward spiral, the organization’s bright spots remain outside the NHL. Flames prospects continue to shine in a multitude of leagues, but some prospects’ development has halted due to injury or player movement.

Let’s take a look at this past week in Flames prospects.

Welcome to The Win Column’s Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames’ prospects have done in their respective leagues and feature one standout prospect. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and is younger than 25 years of age.

Henry Mews, D, University of Michigan

The Ottawa 67’s and Sudbury Wolves alumnus made the jump to the NCAA for this 2025–26 campaign with the University of Michigan. The Flames’ 2024 third-rounder was an OHL superstar and has been a valuable secondary scorer in the NCAA.

That was until this past week, when the Ottawa-born product suffered a season-ending injury, only 10 games into his first season in the NCAA.

Henry Mews is primarily known for his playstyle as an offensive-oriented defender. Mews’s game is highlighted by strong skating, quality puck skills, and high-end offensive instincts. This made him a natural fit with the fast-paced, hard-hitting playstyle of the Michigan Wolverines.

In his first season with the Wolverines, he averaged 16:05 of TOI per game, primarily as a power play specialist and third-pairing defender. To further reinforce the effectiveness of his offensive instincts and puck skills, 3:22 of his TOI per game was on the man advantage.

Overall, he also generated 0.80 scoring chances per game.

Mews also shone with his shot frequency at 4.7 shots per game, but only had a 51% shot accuracy. Look for his main barriers to play at the next level to be his physicality, shooting, and deception.

Calgary Flames prospect updates

AHL

• The Calgary Wranglers had a strong past week, securing victories against Abbotsford on the 29th and a pair of wins against the Condors on November 1st and 2nd.
• Calgary now sits third in the AHL’s Pacific Division with a 6–2–2 record. Their offence has been a bright spot, scoring 35 goals across those games, good for the third-highest in the entire AHL.
• Rory Kerins and Matvei Gridin lead the team in points with 11. Kerins has appeared in 10 games, and Gridin has appeared in 8.
• Goaltender Ivan Prosvetov has found some stability in his game recently, looking more confident and playing well, posting a combined .938 across his two games this past week. Look for this momentum to continue.

Europe

• Expect Swede Theo Stockselius to appear in the CHL soon. He has not appeared in the Sweden U20 league in the past week.

ECHL

• The Rapid City Rush have had some mixed results this campaign and currently sit 13th in the ECHL’s Western Conference with a 3–4–0 record.
• The Flame’s ECHL affiliate went 1–2–0 this past week in a trio of games against the Allen Americans.
• Flames prospect goaltender Arsenii Sergeev has posted a .919 across three starts this year with the Rush.

NCAA

• Defensive prospect Henry Mews suffered a season-ending lower-body injury this past week in a game against Notre Dame. This puts an end to his freshman campaign with Michigan.
• Eric Jamieson appeared in a pair of games against the University of Alaska-Anchorage this past weekend. He had a stellar second game where he posted a goal and an assist in his November 1st game. He looks to be growing his all-around game as he continues to find success in all three zones.
• Flames 2025 sixth-round forward Aiden Lane made his NCAA debut this past week for Harvard University. The Ivy League forward played the University of Connecticut on Halloween, and this bodes well for his development.
• University of North Dakota split a pair of games against Ferris State. Bottom-six forward Cade Littler appeared in only one of those games this past week, the November 1st matchup. UND Teammate Cole Reschny appeared in two games and looks to continue carving out a top-six role, averaging 15:40 against Ferris State on the 31st and 17:56 in their November 1st game. He posted one assist.
• Flames first-rounder, Cullen Potter, played two games against Miami University (Ohio) this past week. He’s been given a large opportunity with ASU this year and even had 22 minutes of TOI in both games last week. He continues to be a strong defensive presence and offensive contributor.
• 2023 third-round forward Jayden Lipinski is still trying to carve out a role for himself, but look for his skating, puck skills, and playmaking to elevate as he continues to get comfortable at the NCAA level. He played a pair of games against Boston University this past week and generated an assist.
• Trevor Hoskins appeared in only one game this past week against the University of Connecticut, where he went -1 and posted an assist in 13:05 on the 1st.

OHL

• Frontenacs forward Jacob Battaglia appeared in two games this past week, one against the Peterborough Petes on the 1st, where he potted a goal and an assist. The second matchup, a 6–1 loss to the London Knights, was not so great, going -1 and getting a trip to the penalty box. Kingston is on a four-game losing streak as well.

WHL

• Axel Hurtig and his Calgary Hitmen leave the week on a six-game win streak. Hurtig has been a stable defensive defender during that time, going +4.
• 2024 sixth-rounder Hunter Laing’s Saskatoon Blades are now on a three-game losing streak. The forward played three games this past week on their American road trip. He played Spokane on the 29th, Seattle on the 31st, and Wenatchee on the 1st. In his game against Wenatchee, he found the back of the net and generated a chance, which granted him an assist.

Russia

• Yan Matveiko had a strong past week, collecting three goals and two assists across the past two games this last weekend.
• Netminder, Yegorov played a single game this past week, a 2–1 OT win against AKM-Yunior Tula Region on the 31st. He stopped 42 of 43 shots he faced.
• Zarubin also appeared in a Halloween game against Kapitan Stupino, where his club also won 2–1. He stopped 21 of 22 shots he faced. AKM Tula is also on a five-game win streak with Zarubin in net.
