Calgary Flames Prospect Update: New Year, New Misa

As most seasons have reached their mid-point, there are a handful of surprises from within the Flames system: Ethan Wyttenbach, Arsenii Sergeev, and the surprising mismanagement of Zayne Parekh. There are also a handful of tragic season-ending injuries to the likes of Henry Mews and Cullen Potter.

Let’s take a look at everything Calgary Flames from this past week.

Welcome to the TWC Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we dive into how the Flames’ prospects have performed in their respective leagues, along with a feature on one standout prospect in Calgary’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and was born in 2001 or later.

Luke Misa, F, Penn State University

Context:

Misa was an OHL powerhouse putting up consecutive 80-point seasons from 2023–2025. Mostly known for his high-end skating, speed, and offensive sense, Misa was one of the biggest rush threats in Major Junior hockey.

After his 2024–2025 season, and the admittance of CHL players to the NCAA, Misa also became one of the fastest players to jump to the NCAA, quickly committing to Penn State for the 2025–2026 season.

This move looked premature as Misa initially struggled with the NCAA adjustment, posting only three points across his first 18 games. Up until the new year, Misa averaged around 13–14 minutes of TOI as well, relegating him to the Nittany Lions’ top 9.

New Year, it’s a New Misa

Since returning from the holiday break, Misa has found new confidence in his speed, puck skills, and offensive senses. This has led to increased on-ice production as he is more effectively using his speed, andhis thinking plays out ahead of time, leading to him posting eight points across January alone.

Misa is also showing off more confident decisions with the puck, more off-puck engagement, and implementing his speed more effectively and deceptively as the season has continued.

For a prospect who fell drastically in his draft year to struggling in an NCAA adjustment, he looks to be playing with a chip on his shoulder. Flames fans are watching McKenna, but they should also keep an eye on #11, as he could realistically be in a Flames jersey in the near future.

Calgary Flames prospect updates

AHL

• The Wranglers split a pair of games against the Laval Rockets this past week. They dropped the first game 5–3 on the 24th, but redeemed themselves with a 6–3 win on the 26th.
• The Wranglers stay at 8th in the AHL’s Pacific Division with a 16–16–10 record.
• Forward Aydar Suniev and goaltender Arsenii Sergeev look to be two prospects poised for breakout performances this upcoming week. Suniev has slowly been adjusting his playmaking and hockey IQ to the professional ranks and is due for a breakout week. Sergeev has emerged as the best goaltending prospect within the Flames organization right now and is splitting AHL games equally.
• Parekh is on a tear in the AHL and is on pace to eclipse many Wrangler defenders in terms of points during his conditioning stint alone. He has already posted four points across just three games.
• There was no movement within the Flames system this week.

ECHL

• The Rapid City Rush also had mixed results in a trio of games against the Utah Grizzlies. The Rush went 1–2–0. They lost games on the 23rd (5–2) and the 24th (6–2). They redeemed themselves in the third game with a 6–3 win on the 26th.
• The Rush are 6th in the ECHL’s Mountain Division with a 17–18–3 record, as they sit just below .500.
• There are no Calgary Flames-affiliated prospects on the Rush.
• Forward Lucas Helland joined the Rush from the Iowa Heartlanders on the 25th.

Europe

• Stockselius got called up to the SHL earlier this week, appearing in a 1–0 loss to the Malmö Redhawks for Djurgårdens IF. He was shortly sent back down to the U20 Djurgårdens IF team, where he played his second game of the week against AIK U20, where the Swede accumulated 29 penalty minutes in a single game on the 24th.

NCAA

• Mace’o Phillips is back to playing regular hockey in the USHL. He played a pair of games against the Muskegon Lumberjacks on the 23rd and 24th. In the second game, Phillips had his first two-point game of the season, collecting two assists (and 10 more penalty minutes).
• It was announced this past week that ASU sophomore and Flames first-rounder Cullen Potter will be out for the remainder of the season. He was injured in the second game of the week against Miami University (Ohio) on the 10th after an awkward hit and will now undergo season-ending surgery.
• Eric Jamieson played a pair of games against St. Cloud State University on the 23rd and 24th. He posted an assist in the second game. Overall, his defensive awareness and positioning remain consistent, and he is a frequent risk mitigator for Denver.
• Calgary has three prospects at the University of North Dakota now with Reschny, Littler, and Wiebe. They played a pair of games against a Potter-less ASU on the 23rd and 24th. Both Wiebe and Reschny found the scoresheet in the second game with an assist each.
• Wyttenbach continues to be an offensive and playmaking force at the NCAA level. The freshman is now on a 6-game point streak after a goal and an assist against Sacred Heart University on the 23rd and an assist against the University of Connecticut on the 24th. He continues to lack some physical engagement and has minor physical avoidance, which might create problems after the NCAA.
• Trevor Hoskins played at Northeastern University on the 22nd and 23rd. In his first game, the Canadian posted an assist. The adjustment to Merrimack College has gone well for the sophomore, and he looks to be levelling up his hockey IQ and playmaking ability.

WHL

• Calgary Hitmen defender Axel Hurtig had a busy week with three games. In his first game of the week on the 20th, he posted two assists against Medicine Hat. He went +3 in his second game against Red Deer on the 23rd. In his third game, he got into an entertaining scrap against Regina’s Keets Fawcett on the 24th.
• Forward Andrew Basha continues to light up the WHL in his over-age year. He is now on a 5-game point streak. The two-way forward netted a goal and an assist in a 4–3 win against the Hitmen on the 20th, a goal against the Blades in a 3–2 SOL on the 23rd, and an assist in the Tigers’ only goal in a 5–1 loss to Prince Albert.
• The only point in Laing’s three-game week was a goal against the Tigers on the 23rd. The power forward continues to be a physical presence that is both intimidating and effective at the WHL level.

Russia

• Goaltender Daniil Chechelev had a solid past week, appearing in only one game, but making 23/24 stops in a 2–1 victory against Sokol Krasnoyarsk on the 25th.
• 2024 3rd-round goaltender Krill Zarubin made a single appearance in relief against AKM-Yunior Tula Region, stopping all 15 shots he faced. Zarubin’s mobility and athleticism look better and better every single week.
• 2023 6th rounder, Yegor Yegorov, continues to be a workhorse for MHK Spartak-MAH Moskva, appearing in all three of their games this week. Despite stopping a whooping 74/78 shots, he left this week with a 1–2–0 record after losing his first two games on the 21st against Amurskie Tigry Khabarovsk (1–0), and on the 24th against Sakhalinskiye Akuly (2–1 SOL). His team did show up in their 3rd game, a rematch against Sakhalinskiye Akuly, on the 25th with a 4–2 victory.
