The Flames made two big trades a few years ago, and with the outcome of a draft pick riding on Maple Leafs/Panthers, we're one step closer to knowing the result.
Back in the summer of 2023, the Calgary Flames made a blockbuster trade to send Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers, and later in the off-season, they made a deal to send Sean Monahan to the Montreal Canadiens.
As a result, the team would either end up keeping their own first-round pick if it was in the top-10, or they would send their pick to Montreal and instead keep Florida's pick, and after the Flames landed at No. 16 overall, the latter was the way things have worked out.
That meant the team had a lot riding on Sunday night's Game 7 between the Panthers and the Maple Leafs, with Ryan Pike of Flames Nation revealing that a Toronto win would see the Flames pick No. 22, but a loss and the Panthers advancing would see the pick come in the No. 29-32 range.
Those implications meant that Flames fans were riding hard for Toronto in Game 7 to improve their draft stock, but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be, as the Maple Leafs again flamed out before passing the second round.
This means that Flames fans will again be hanging on to the results of the Eastern Conference Finals, with a Carolina Hurricanes victory meaning that the pick would be either 29 or 30, opposed to 31 or 32.
Ultimately, this deal was a bad one from Brad Treliving, who was looking to save his job in his final season with the Flames, but now it's about to be over, with fans in Calgary now simply waiting to see which of the final four picks they'll have in the 2025 NHL Draft.
