Canada tops Finland to secure spot in 4 Nations Face-Off championship

Although Finland made it interesting at the end, Canada ultimately came away with a win, securing three points and a spot in the 4 Nations championship game against the United States.

There was plenty on the line coming into the game; both Finland and Canada could punch their ticket to the final versus the U.S. with a regulation win.

Like their two prior games, Canada started quickly, scoring a goal just 4:13 into the first period (Connor McDavid, unassisted). They then showed their explosive offense's ability to strike quickly, as Nathan MacKinnon followed up McDavid's goal 46 seconds later with one of his own.

After the second period, it looked like the Canadians were going to run away with the game; Finland coach Antti Pennanen pulled his goaltender Kevin Lankinen, swapping him for Juuse Saros, who started against the U.S. The move worked well for the Finns, as Saros stopped all 14 shots he faced.

After Esa Lindell cut the Canadian lead to 4-1 with a little under seven minutes to go, the Finns managed to score two goals, both by Mikael Granlund, with their goalie pulled and a six on five advantage.

However, it wasn't enough, as the Finns once again pulled their goalie after Granlund's second goal; soon after, Canada captain Sidney Crosby iced the game with an empty net goal.

The 5-3 victory eliminates both the Finns and the Swedes from the final and sets up a rematch between Canada and the U.S.

For the Canadians, coach Jon Cooper will now have plenty of decisions to make regarding his lineup Thursday night. Cooper decided to go with goaltender Jordan Binnington in net once again, despite many fans clamoring for Vegas' Adin Hill to play. Binnington was solid, allowing just one goal in 5v5 play prior to the two he allowed when Finland pulled their goalie.

For the skaters, Cooper swapped out forward Seth Jarvis for Travis Konecny in the lineup. He also switched up his forward lines, playing Mark Stone with McDavid and Brayden Point and Sam Reinhart with Crosby and MacKinnon. These moves paid off, as McDavid and Point each had a goal; MacKinnon chipped in two goals and Reinhart tallied three assists.

Defensively, Cale Makar, who was out Saturday with an illness, was back in the lineup, a huge boost to the Canadian blue line.

The U.S.-Canada final will be one of the biggest hockey games in recent memory; Canada showed that they are able to bounce back from a tough loss and make the necessary changes to their lineup to win.

The U.S. and Canada will play for the 4 Nations title Thursday night in Boston (8 p.m. EST, ESPN).

Longtime NY Rangers Defenseman Calls it a Career After Getting No Contract Offers This Summer

Chad Ruhwedel spent over 13 years in the NHL, and after winning a Stanley Cup and struggling to find a deal this off-season, he's officially hung up the skates. More and more talent continues to enter the National Hockey League year after year, and with only so many rosters spots to take up around the league, we've seen many veterans depart this off-season. For the most part, those players have gone to Europe to continue their careers and keep getting opportunities, but now, we've officially seen a former Stanley Cup winner hang up their skates. Former Penguin Chad Ruhwedel calls it quits After entering the league in 2012 as an un-drafted player out of San Diego, Chad Ruhwedel carved out a solid role for himself, playing for Buffalo, Pittsburgh and New York throughout his career. In that time, Ruhwedel never became more than a depth defenseman that could fill a role anywhere on the blue line for a team, and after playing for over a decade, he clearly proved that it was a role that needed filling and one that he could easily fill for many successful teams. His crowning achievement came in 2017 when he hoisted the Stanley Cup with the Penguins, but now, he has officially made the announcement that he is retiring from the NHL. The 35-year old appeared in 369 games throughout his career, posting 13 goals and 50 points in that time, last playing for the Rangers where he played in a combined 10 games over the past two seasons. Unfortunately, he simply didn't get any new offers this off-season with so many talented young blue liners coming into the NHL, and after a very successful career at the highest level, we'll now wait to see what the future holds for Ruhwedel.

King of New York: Pete Alonso breaks major Mets all-time record

Pete Alonso is now the New York Mets' all-time home run king. With his opposite-field, two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night, Alonso clubbed the 253rd and 254th home runs of his Mets career, moving him into sole possession of first place on the team's all-time list. He moved two home runs ahead of the previous record-holder, Darryl Strawberry, who hit 252 home runs with the team between the 1983 and 1990 seasons. Here is a look at his record-setting home run. Later in the bottom of the sixth inning, Alonso hit his 254th home run: Along with the all-time Mets home run lead, Alonso is also the Mets' single-season home run leader with 53 home runs during the 2019 season. Strawberry congratulated Alonso on breaking his record: His home runs on Tuesday were his 27th and 28th of the season. It is a big deal for Alonso because there was some doubt this past offseason about whether he would have a chance to set this record. Even though he was close, the uncertainty around his future, given his free-agent status, created a lot of questions about where he would play. Ultimately, the Mets re-signed him to a two-year, $54 million contract that includes an opt-out clause following the 2025 season. That opt-out will again create some uncertainty about his future, but it is pretty clear Alonso still has a lot of power left in his bat. Whether he returns to the Mets or goes somewhere else, he will remain the franchise's greatest home run hitter for the foreseeable future. He is now on top of the record books for the single season and career.

Jordan Love's thumb surgery comes at inopportune time for Packers

The Green Bay Packers have a cause for concern with Jordan Love in the preseason. The quarterback suffered a thumb injury during the Packers' 30-10 loss to the New York Jets on Saturday. Love went 1-of-5 passing for seven yards and took a sack for -3 yards in the defeat. Both of his drives ended in punts. Per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, Love is set to have surgery on his thumb after seeing how it held up at practice on Monday. General manager Brian Gutekunst believes Love will be ready for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. "Gutekunst sounded adamant that Love will be ready for Week 1 against the Lions," Schneidman wrote. "Hit his left hand on a helmet on that half-scramble vs. Jets. Wanted to see how it felt at practice yesterday and decided to get it fixed to avoid future issues. Will be with team in Indianapolis. "Brian Gutekunst says Jordan Love is having a procedure done on his left thumb. It’s a 'ligament thing.' Hurt it in the preseason opener. Gutekunst hopes he returns to practice next week." The injury comes at an inopportune time for the Packers. Love and the majority of his receivers have not been in sync during training camp and in the preseason game. Like last season, Packers' receivers have dropped passes during practices and did so in the preseason opener against the Jets. Green Bay needs Love on the field, gaining chemistry with his pass-catching targets, including first-round pick Matthew Golden, before it plays the Lions.

Browns may not be prepared for one thing with Shedeur Sanders

Browns may not be prepared for one thing with Shedeur Sanders

During a recent edition of the "Orange and Brown Talk Podcast," Cleveland Browns beat reporter Ashley Bastock of the Cleveland Plain Dealer suggested that Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski may not be prepared for the "potential fan backlash" that could arise regarding the team's handling of rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Stefanski seemed to say plenty about the subject when it was learned on Monday that Sanders remains fourth on the club's unofficial depth chart even though he enjoyed a solid NFL debut in the club's preseason opener at the Carolina Panthers on Friday night. Also on Monday, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer made it known that Stefanski won't be in a rush to play Sanders or fellow first-year pro Dillon Gabriel ahead of schedule. "Stefanski and the other offensive coaches have a plan for the rookie QBs, and they’re not about to be swayed by public opinion and the Sanders-mania that’s sweeping the nation," Cabot wrote. "Yes, it was a great debut against the Panthers with two beautiful touchdown passes to first-year receiver Kaden Davis. But Stefanski always keeps things simple for his rookie quarterbacks in preseason games, and most have looked excellent in their outings under him. Therefore, he wasn’t ready Monday to start handing over those precious starting reps to Sanders when he’s unlikely to start Week 1 and doesn’t necessarily need that valuable time with the ones — yet." Neither Gabriel nor presumed backup Kenny Pickett played against the Panthers after they were slowed by hamstring injuries during training camp. Meanwhile, Sanders completed 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in Cleveland's 30-10 victory over Carolina. Gabriel returned to the practice field on Monday, but Pickett reportedly could be sidelined "for a couple more weeks." It's unclear if either signal-caller will play in Cleveland's preseason matchup at the Philadelphia Eagles this coming Saturday. "They have had a process with Shedeur all the way through," Cabot added during the latest episode of the podcast. "And even when they were taking heat nationally from all kinds of pundits and experts saying that they were setting Shedeur up to fail, they stuck to their guns. And even after his really, really nice debut, they really haven’t changed the process." As recently as Tuesday morning, Zac Jackson of The Athletic mentioned that veteran Joe Flacco is still "the clear leader" to be Cleveland's Week 1 starter over Sanders, Gabriel and Pickett. As of Tuesday morning, FanDuel Sportsbook had Flacco as a -310 betting favorite to get the nod for the Browns' regular-season opener versus the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7. Previous whispers indicated Stefanski will want to name his Week 1 QB1 before Cleveland wraps the preseason up with a home game against the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 23. It certainly sounds like Stefanski won't lose any sleep over disappointing members of a passionate fan base who want to see what Sanders can do against live defenses in meaningful contests.
