Canadian Olympic hockey gold medalist Meghan Agosta announces retirement

One of the most decorated players in the game is officially hanging them up.

On Friday, former Canadian national team star Meghan Agosta announced that she is retiring from hockey.

They 37-year-old last played competitively for her country at the 2018 Winter Olympics, where she was stopped by USA goaltender Maddie Rooney on the final attempt in the shootout of the Gold Medal Game in Pyeongchang.

Agosta was a key part of Team Canada squads that won gold in Turin (2006), Vancouver (2010) and Sochi (2014). She was named tournament MVP in 2010 where she led all players in goals (9) and points (15).

Following the 2014 Games, she elected to take time away from hockey, becoming a probationary constable with the Vancouver Police Department.

She returned to hockey in 2016, where she rejoined Canada for the IIHF Women’s World Championships. Her final three appearances wearing the Maple Leaf saw her take silver at the Women’s Worlds in 2016 and 2017, before losing to the Americans at the 2018 Olympics.

In her 12 years of national team service, Agosta was part of five gold medal winning teams (3 Olympic, 2 WWC), and seven silver medalists (1 Olympic, 6 WWC).

Agosta played four years at Mercyhurst University from 2006-11, setting NCAA records for goals (157) and points (303). She was entually surpassed by the likes of Jennifer Botterill, Jenny Potter and Gretchen Uilion. She was a First-Team All-American four times, and was a Patty Kazmaier Award top-three Finalist each season.

The Windsor native also had success in a brief pro career. With the Montreal Stars of the defunct Canadian Women’s Hockey League, Agosta led the league in points in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, helping the Stars win the Clarkson Cup in 2012, the same season she was named league MVP.
