All signs point to the long partnership between Brendan Gallagher and the Montreal Canadiens concluding this summer — and a potential frontrunner has already been named for the 34-year-old.
The Vancouver Canucks are a team that could make sense as a destination if Montreal ultimately decides to move on from Gallagher this offseason, The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reported.
“We mentioned Vancouver, and that would be a good spot for him,” Pagnotta said during a recent appearance on Daily Faceoff Live. “We’ll see if the Canucks reciprocate in terms of interest.”
The insider noted that Vancouver’s ongoing roster transition could create an opportunity for Gallagher, particularly if the organization continues to prioritize adding experienced voices to a young group.
Gallagher has spent his entire NHL career in Montreal and remains one of the most respected players in the dressing room. However, with the Canadiens continuing to build around a younger core, questions have emerged about whether both sides could benefit from a change of scenery.
Pagnotta also suggested that any potential deal would likely require creativity due to Gallagher’s $6.5 million cap hit for the 2026-27 season.
“The Canadiens obviously would have to add more to that mix,” Pagnotta added. “You’re going to save dollars long-term because Gallagher is entering the final year of his deal, but he’s got six and a half million next season.”
Interest from Vancouver may not be one-sided, either.
Canucks reporter Rick Dhaliwal revealed Monday that he spoke directly with Gallagher’s agent, Gerry Johannson, who confirmed there has been communication.
“Vancouver has initially expressed interest, but lots of moving parts,” Johannson told Dhaliwal. “It’s on their desk, they do have interest.”
Although Vancouver finished at the bottom of the NHL in 2025-26 and remains firmly in rebuilding mode, Gallagher could provide valuable leadership and veteran stability for a roster filled with young players.
The longtime Canadiens alternate captain recorded seven goals and 23 points last season.
Whether the Canucks ultimately pursue a deal remains unclear, but the reported interest is notable as Montreal explores its options. If a trade cannot be completed, the Habs could also consider a buyout as they evaluate Gallagher’s future.
For now, Vancouver appears to be one of the teams most worth watching as speculation surrounding Gallagher continues to build.
