Canadiens Predicted to Land Rangers Star This Offseason

The Montreal Canadiens surprised many people this past season, earning a spot in the postseason. Despite having a very young team, Montreal was able to put together a strong run, taking another step forward.

As the offseason begins for the team, the front office will have a lot of work to do to keep building. This could see Montreal look to make a big splash as the organization tries to become more of a true contender.

One name that could be interesting is New York Rangers star Alexis Lafreniere. Lafreniere had a down year for the Rangers, and there have been all sorts of trade rumors flying around.

The Canadiens could capitalize on this to bring in the former first overall pick. NHL writer Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report listed the Canadiens as a potential landing spot for Lafreniere if New York were to move him.

"Second, not only did Montreal take a huge step forward this season and get itself back into the playoffs, but it is also going to be in the market for another top-six winger option that can score. At 24, Lafreniere would absolutely fit into the current core in Montreal and could still become an impact player alongside the likes of Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. The question comes down to what Montreal could or would realistically offer."

Adding a player like Lafreniere could be good for the Canadiens, helping them to keep pushing toward a title. Lafreniere posted 17 goals and 28 assists over 82 games for New York this past season.

It remains to be seen if the Rangers would move on from Lafreniere, but if they do, Montreal could be a very intriguing option.
