The Montreal Canadiens wasted no time making a change following their 6-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday night.

Less than an hour after the final whistle, the team announced they recalled goaltender Jacob Fowler from their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket.

The Canadiens also recalled forward Owen Beck and defenseman Adam Engstrom.

Montreal saw both their current NHL goalies struggle against the Lightning, as Jakub Dobes started the game but was pulled after giving up three goals on 14 shots through the first period. Sam Montembeault fared no better in relief, giving up three goals on 13 shots through 40 minutes.

Dobes struggled mightily through November and the first half of December, giving up three or more goals in eight of 11 appearances. As for Montembeault, six of his last seven appearances have resulted in losses, including a 5-2 defeat to the Ottawa Senators last week.

Canadiens’ fans will soon get their first glimpse of Fowler at the NHL level. The 2023 third-round pick has played in 15 games with the Rocket this season, posting a 10-5-0 record with a .919 save percentage (SV%) and 2.09 goals against average (GAA).

Fowler spent two seasons in the NCAA with Boston College between 2023-24 and 2024-25, where in 74 career games, he posted a .932 SV% and 1.90 GAA.

The Canadiens are now 15-11-3 with 33 points, fourth in the Atlantic Division and 11th in the Eastern Conference. They are two points out of the a wild card spot in the East.

Montreal now heads on the road and will face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday, followed by a Saturday night matchup in Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers.
