Canucks Continue Front-Office Overhaul With Two New Hires

The Vancouver Canucks continued to reshape their hockey operations department Monday, hiring Ryan Stewart as director of hockey strategy and player evaluation and Adam Sergerie as a pro scout. General manager Ryan Johnson announced both moves, with Stewart stepping into a newly created role.

In his official statement, Johnson was enthusiastic about the hires, stating, “Ryan brings a championship pedigree and a wealth of hockey knowledge to this brand new position. He is someone we will lean on internally to help provide insight and information for our front office. With all his varied experience, wearing a number of different hats, Ryan is a big asset for our group moving forward. By bringing in Ryan and with the addition of Adam to our pro scouting ranks, our organization continues to invest in the areas needed to help our team grow and develop during this stage of our rebuild.”

Stewart arrives from San Jose, where he spent the past four seasons as a senior advisor overseeing the Sharks’ pro personnel staff in North America and Europe. Before that, he spent parts of 16 seasons in the Chicago organization, rising from video coach to assistant general manager and filling roles in between, including director of professional scouting, pro scout, amateur scout, and assistant coach. He was part of Chicago’s Stanley Cup wins in 2013 and 2015. A former ECHL forward, Stewart played 325 pro games, primarily with Greenville, along with the Florida Everblades, before breaking into management as the Grrrowl’s assistant general manager and later general manager.

Sergerie is coming to Vancouver after one season as director of scouting for the WHL’s Penticton Vees, whose 44-14-6-4 debut set a CHL record for wins by a team in its first season and delivered the B.C. Division title. The Thunder Bay, Ontario, native previously spent four seasons with the Sherwood Park Crusaders across the AJHL and BCHL in roles that included assistant coach, general manager and president of hockey operations.

The additions are the latest in a busy offseason of front-office turnover for Johnson, who took over as general manager in May and has since overhauled the coaching staff and management ranks as Vancouver works through its rebuild.
