Vancouver Canucks forward Lukas Reichel officially cleared waivers on Sunday, per Donnie & Dhali’s Rick Dhaliwal.

The 23-year-old was placed on waivers by the team on Saturday after Friday night’s blockbuster trade that saw the arrival of defenceman Zeev Buium and forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Öhrgren, in exchange for Quinn Hughes. Rossi was on injured reserve (IR) when the trade was made, but was activated Sunday for the team’s game against the New Jersey Devils, creating space for him and his fellow former Minnesota Wild skaters.

Reichel was acquired by the Canucks back in October from the Chicago Blackhawks. Less than a month after acquiring him, Dhaliwal reported that the Canucks made Reichel available for trade, amid a poor start to his time in Vancouver. After he cleared waivers this weekend, Dhaliwal reported again that the team is still actively shopping him, with “a chance of a deal happening.”

In 14 appearances with Vancouver, Reichel failed to make an offensive impact, recording one assist and averaging just over 13 minutes per night. He last appeared with the team on November 28th against the San Jose Sharks and has been a healthy scratch in recent weeks. Now with new faces in the locker room, there’s even less room in the Canucks’ forward group, leaving Reichel as the odd man out.

Reichel was originally selected at 17th overall by the Blackhawks at the 2020 NHL entry draft. The Nürnberg, Germany native played 174 games with Chicago, scoring 22 goals and adding 36 assists. If Reichel doesn’t get dealt, he’ll gear up for the Abbotsford Canucks, making his return to the AHL since last appearing with the Rockford IceHogs in the 2024 Calder Cup playoffs.

The young skater will also be making his Olympic debut this February in Milan, already named to Team Germany for the upcoming games. Reichel has appeared three times for his country at the World Championships, scoring seven goals and 18 points in 19 games.
