Canucks Kiefer Sherwood out day-to-day

The Vancouver Canucks will be without left winger Kiefer Sherwood for their Monday night clash against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre, head coach Adam Foote told reporters on Monday morning.

The 30-year-old forward was not listed by The Athletic’s Thomas Drance in Vancouver’s morning skate lines, but was present before Foote announced his status as day-to-day, with the potential to miss up to a week of regular-season action.

Sherwood played 18:56 of ice time in the Canucks’ last contest, a 5-0 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night and has not missed a game in the 2025-26 season, playing an average of 17:32 across Vancouver’s 44 games.

As of Monday, he ranked third among top scorers for the Canucks with 17 goals and 23 points, only trailing Elias Pettersson’s 26 points in 36 games and Filip Hronek’s 26 points in 44 games, all but three of which have been assists.

While Sherwood has enjoyed a relatively productive season, trade speculation has ramped up in recent weeks as the Canucks have struggled to produce significant results. A veteran of 309 NHL games and with a contract expiring at the end of the season, he could be well-suited for a trade ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline.

According to Drance, the Canucks have not given Sherwood’s camp permission to negotiate with other teams, limiting the potential for a contract extension to be worked into a trade.

Heading into Monday’s clash in Montreal, the Canucks sat last among the NHL’s 32 teams, with a dire record of 16-23-5, good for 37 points and 11 points short of the final Western Conference Wild Card spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Canucks will continue their six-game road trip on Tuesday with the back end of back-to-back games against the Ottawa Senators, before taking on the Columbus Blue Jackets to cap off the road swing.

They return home on Jan. 17 to face the Edmonton Oilers, kicking off an eight-game home stand to end January.
