For the fourth day in a row, a defenseman has landed on the waiver wire. This time it is Vancouver Canucks defender Jack Thompson. Thompson hasn’t played yet this season after being struck in the face by a puck during Vancouver’s pre-season. Now that he’s back to full health, Vancouver will make the moves needed to assign Thompson to the Abbotsford Canucks.
Thompson joined the Canucks in a swap that sent Jett Woo to the San Jose Sharks in March. He closed out the season in Abbotsford and stood out as one of the team’s top defenders. Thompson scored 13 points in 14 games with the AHL’s Canucks. That production earned Thompson a one-year, two-way contract extension with Vancouver over the summer.
His breakout in Abbotsford was a brighter spark than anything the 24 year old has managed throughout his four-year pro career. He seemed to find a stride driving the Abbotsford lineup, outscoring the point total (12) he managed in 42 games with the San Jose Barracuda to start the season. He has totaled 104 points in 217 games, and six seasons in the AHL.
Thompson’s only extended look in the NHL came during the 2024-25 season with the San Jose Sharks. He scored the only 10 points of his NHL career while playing through 31 games in the San Jose lineup. The Sharks were outscored and outshot in Thompson’s minutes, though he showed a glimmer of two-way ability and offensive upside. He could be claimed on waivers for teams willing to spend their extra defender role on testing that upside. The likelier outcome, though, would see Thompson clear waivers and begin his 2026-27 season in Abbotsford.
