Quinn Hughes reached a major milestone on Saturday night, even as the Vancouver Canucks came up short against the Edmonton Oilers.
The 25-year-old blueliner became the franchise’s all-time leader in points scored by a defenseman with an assist on Brock Boeser’s third-period goal in a 3–1 loss.
Hughes' assists at the start of the third period in Vancouver's lone goal of the day gave him 410 career points, passing Alexander Edler’s previous mark of 409. It took him only 435 games to reach the record, while Edler set his total over 925.
The blueliner now holds the franchise records for both points and assists by a defenseman (351 to Edler's 310 in second place) and remains under contract through the 2026–27 season, with his future in Vancouver rather unclear.

“It means lots,” Hughes said postgame. “It’s a great organization and a lot of great players have come through over 56 or 57 years, and it’s an honor for sure.”
The game itself, however, provided little cause for celebration in Vancouver. After a scoreless first period, Edmonton struck twice in the second, including Noah Philp’s first NHL goal.
Boeser’s finish early in the third gave Vancouver life, but Leon Draisaitl sealed the result with an empty-net goal. Hughes got his assists and finished two seconds short of reaching 26 minutes of ice time.
“They capitalized on some looks,” Hughes said. “(Goalie Thatcher Demko) played great. Shots were pretty heavy favorites to them, and yeah, I don’t know. I saw the same thing you did.”
The loss marked Adam Foote’s first defeat as Vancouver’s head coach, two days after he earned his first win with a victory over the Calgary Flames.
“We were right there, and when you have a performance from your goaltender like that, killing five penalties against a power play like that, you have to be a little bit more patient out there,” Foote said after Saturday's loss. “We started the third, we were all over them, we were flying, and then got another penalty, and we just have to control ourselves a bit more. We have to be a little more disciplined.”
The Canucks (1–1–0) return home Monday to face the St. Louis Blues at 7:30 p.m. ET.
