Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes and goaltender Thatcher Demko acknowledged the fans' tension surrounding the team’s slow start and the back-to-back losses over the past few days.
The Canucks fell 5–2 to the St. Louis Blues on Monday, their second straight defeat after a 3–1 loss against the Edmonton Oilers.
Vancouver is one of only three teams yet to convert a power play (in seven opportunities) and they're tied for the eighth-worst goals-per-game average at 2.67.
“We definitely need to change some things up,” Hughes said on Tuesday. “Just from everything that’s happened the last couple years, it probably feels a little bit more urgent than maybe if we were a team that was in the playoffs last year.”
Lots of daylight for Canucks to fix start.

Thatcher Demko: “We’ve got to clean some things up. We're not turning a blind eye to that. But we're the same group we were a week ago. I feel good about our group, and guys are excited to get on the road.” https://t.co/BqJxtj1wdg
Added Hughes: “We haven’t deserved the right to be 1–2 and say, ‘We’ll be good.’ We have to go prove it.
“There’s a mental challenge, sure. But it’s our job to be positive throughout the whole season, no matter what’s going on.”
The captain added that the solution lies within the dressing room, starting with himself.
“Definitely, there's waves (of ups and downs) and I felt it last night,” Hughes said. “But for myself, just be positive and bring your best every game. So that's what I need to try to do, and everyone needs to do.
“Just rely on our teammates and rely on each other. The guys in this room are going to get us out of it.”
Demko has saved the second-most goals above expectation (4.4) and leads the league in goals against average better than expected (2.25), per Money Puck.
The goalie, who has been a steadying force to start the season despide the losing record, said the ongoing issues are “super correctable.”
“Hopefully, we can address those things we have in video,” Demko said Tuesday. “We had so much momentum in the preseason, and I don’t think it’s going to take much to get back to that level.”
Demko made it clear he's rejecting the idea that panic is creeping into the room.
“I don’t think there’s a panic level or anything like that,” Demko said. “We know we have to address some things. We’ve got to clean some things up, for sure. But I feel good about our group.”
The Canucks begin a five-game road trip Thursday in Dallas, hoping to start it by getting back to a .500 balanche through the first four games of the season.
