The Vancouver Canucks have started notifying teams they’re open to trading veteran players.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, describing the situation on Wednesday's "32 Thoughts" column, the message from the franchise is clear: everyone is up for grabs and everything will be considered.
“When Vancouver notified teams of its desire to discuss ‘veterans,’ the message was unmistakable,” Friedman wrote, “'We want to know what you think about our players.'
“No limitations, talk to us, we’ll decide what we’re willing or able to do.”
Friedman reported that expiring contracts and even some players with term remaining on their deals are in play. However, there are exceptions, most notably, franchise captain Quinn Hughes.

“We know Quinn Hughes is not available, for now,” Friedman added. “Even if Filip Hronek didn’t have a no-move clause, I don’t think there’s any desire to move him.”
The Canucks seem to be focused on acquiring younger NHL-ready talent over draft picks, and Friedman believes winger Kiefer Sherwood could be one of the first to move.
“If anyone could go quickly, it’s the feisty winger,” Friedman said about Sherwood.
Friedman mentioned a few other players that could potentially be on the move, including Conor Garland, though Vancouver may prefer to keep him in tow. Defenseman Tyler Myers was also cited as a player teams might ask about.
Friedman also addressed speculation around Hughes’ future, following fellow reporter Rick Dhaliwal’s comments earlier in the week, suggesting a trade could come if no long-term commitment is made.
“Several sources pushed back hard — very hard — on the idea he’s already made a decision,” Friedman said. “Eventually, there will be a discussion about his future.”
Hughes is under contract through June 2027, but he will become eligible to sign an extension in July 2026.
The Canucks have lost six of their last seven games and sit at 10–12–2 heading into Friday's matchup with the San Jose Sharks at 4:00 p.m. ET.
