The Vancouver Canucks are going to be without their new young defenseman and a veteran winger for some time, as the team announced Monday afternoon that they have placed Zeev Buium and Brock Boeser on injured reserve.

Both players were injured during Sunday’s 3-2 loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Buium took a puck to the face, and Boeser was on the receiving end of an illegal check to the head by Penguins winger Bryan Rust, who is facing possible supplemental discipline for the hit.

Speaking during an appearance on Sekeres and Price, NHL insider Darren Dreger shared an update as to what he’s heard on Buium’s timeline after the injury.

“We start with Buium, I think we all saw it, a shot to the face,” Dreger said. “Best case scenario is, I think probably a week, maybe two weeks, but that’s upon further review and getting through all the medical work to see what’s going on there. I mean that was a scary injury… I think minimally, you’re looking at 10 days to two weeks.”

Buium, who was acquired earlier this season from the Minnesota Wild as a centerpiece of the deal that sent star defenseman Quinn Hughes to the Wild, has 6 points in 20 games since switching teams. The No. 12 overall pick from the 2024 NHL Draft has 20 points in 51 career regular season games, though he made his NHL debut in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year with Minnesota.

Boeser, who re-signed with the Canucks last summer on a long-term contract, has 12 goals and 13 assists in his 50 appearances to this point in the year.

Vancouver is in the midst of a roster teardown that kicked off with the Hughes deal, as the Canucks are in last place in the NHL by an eight-point margin with a 17-30-5 record.
