The Washington Capitals have acquired some goaltending depth from a division rival. According to a team announcement, the Capitals have acquired netminder Rémi Poirier from the New Jersey Devils for a 2027 seventh-round pick.
Poirier, 25, was drafted 185th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2020 NHL Draft. The Farnham, QC, native was playing with the QMJHL’s Gatineau Olympiques at the time, earning a career record of 62-46-13 with a .902 SV% and 3.06 GAA.
The former sixth-round pick joined the professional ranks in the 2023-24 campaign, splitting his time between the AHL’s Texas Stars and the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads. However, that was the last time Poirier ever played in the ECHL.
He became the starting netminder for the AHL Stars last season. He played relatively well, earning a 27-19-8 record with a .912 SV% and 2.61 GAA. Unfortunately, although he’s had promising postseason performances in the past, he struggled throughout the 2026 Calder Cup playoffs.
Surprisingly, the Devils claimed Poirier off waivers from the Stars ahead of the 2026-27 season. New Jersey already had Jake Allen and Nico Daws rostered, so the addition of Poirier raised some questions. Despite spending an entire month with the Devils, he never appeared in a game for them and was rarely invited to practice.
After New Jersey acquired Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets, Poirier lost any remaining chance that he would suit up for the Devils. Hopefully, for his sake, he’ll have more opportunity with the Capitals. Washington lost third-string netminder Clay Stevenson before the season via waivers, and Poirier will likely be his replacement on the organizational depth chart.
