After returning as a regular to practice yesterday, the Washington Capitals will return their starting netminder to the active roster. According to beat reporter Sammi Silber, the Capitals activated netminder Logan Thompson from the injured reserve and assigned Mitch Gibson to the AHL’s Hershey Bears.
Thompson has been on Washington’s injured reserve with a lower-body ailment since their October 20th matchup against the Los Angeles Kings. Fortunately, the Capitals had only one game in the past week, limiting Thompson’s absence.
Despite beating the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, Washington likely wasn’t confident in Charlie Lindgren as the starter moving forward. The Capitals’ defense bailed him out for much of the game, limiting the Sabres to 21 shots on net through 63:42. Still, Lindgren stopped only 15 of those attempts, leading to a disappointing .857 SV% on the night.
Now the Capitals can return to a netminder who has been on cruise control since joining the organization ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. This season, Thompson has earned a 4-3-0 record in seven starts with a .901 SV% and 2.90 GAA, including 1.9 Goals Saved Above Average. Throughout the past two years, Thompson has managed a dominant 62-27-12 record with a .911 SV% and 2.46 GAA, including two fourth-place finishes in Vezina Trophy voting.
Meanwhile, Gibson returns to AHL Hershey without debuting in the NHL. He’s gotten off to a subpar start this season, splitting his first two appearances with an .881 SV% and 3.50 GAA.
