Capitals’ Vincent Desharnais Out Four To Six Weeks

The Washington Capitals announced today that defenseman Vincent Desharnais will be sidelined for a four-to-six-week period after undergoing a successful appendectomy surgery on Thursday.

Desharnais remains on the club’s active roster, but it seems almost certain, given his recovery timeline, that the Capitals will place him on injured reserve in order to open up a spot on their 23-man active roster.

Today’s development will leave a hole in the top-four of Washington’s defense for at least a month. Desharnais had occupied a spot on the Capitals’ second pairing, on the right side of partner Martin Fehervary. The 30-year-old has been Washington’s No. 3 defenseman by ice time so far this year, averaging 19:24 time on ice per game through nine contests. His 3:24 short-handed time on ice per game ranks second among Capitals blueliners.

A hulking 6’7″, 230-pound right-shot defenseman, Desharnais is in his first season with the Capitals. He signed a four-year, $4.2MM AAV contract with the club over the summer, after a successful stint with the rebuilding San Jose Sharks. While he’s never been much of an offensive producer, even dating back to his time in the ECHL, Desharnais has always been one of his team’s most relentless and physical blueliners. He’s already registered 22 hits this season.

For as long as Desharnais is sidelined as he recovers from this surgery, the Capitals will be forced to shuffle their defense a little bit. According to Sammi Silber of The District Standard, the Capitals shifted Timothy Liljegren into Desharnais’ vacated lineup spot alongside Fehervary. The 27-year-old plays a puck-moving style that contrasts heavily with the way Desharnais approaches the game, and he will be a dramatically different partner for Fehervary than Desharnais was.

In Liljegren’s former spot on the Capitals’ third pairing, Washington has plugged in veteran Dylan McIlrath. McIlrath, 34, stands 6’5″, 245 pounds and plays a comparable style to Desharnais. The longtime AHLer spent last season as a spare defenseman for the Capitals and seems to be occupying that role once again in 2026-27.
