Carolina Hurricanes Look Like Cup Favorites

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes are not hinting at contender status anymore. They are playing like a team that expects to be the last one skating.

Carolina has built its identity on pressure, pace and structure, and right now, it all looks dialed in. The Hurricanes forecheck relentlessly, force turnovers and turn small advantages into sustained offensive zone time. Opponents struggle to clear the puck. When they do, Carolina resets and comes right back.

It starts with the system, but it shows up in the details.

Under coach Rod Brind’Amour, the Hurricanes play a fast, disciplined style that limits mistakes and punishes teams that make them. Defensemen activate without exposing the back end. Forwards track back with purpose. There is little wasted movement and even less panic.

The result is a team that controls games, not just survives them.

Carolina’s depth stands out as much as its structure. The Hurricanes roll four lines that can generate offense, and they don’t rely on one player to carry the load. Scoring comes from everywhere, which makes defensive matchups difficult and adjustments even harder.

On the blue line, Carolina continues to separate itself. The defense corps moves the puck cleanly, closes gaps quickly and contributes offensively without sacrificing positioning. It’s a balance many teams chase and few sustain.

Goaltending has matched the level in front of it. The Hurricanes don’t need highlight-reel heroics every night. They need timely saves — and they’re getting them.

That combination — structure, depth and reliable goaltending — is what defines championship teams. Carolina checks every box.

There will be tests ahead. The Eastern Conference remains deep, and playoff hockey exposes weaknesses quickly. But the Hurricanes are not showing many right now. They dictate pace, limit chances and stay composed in tight moments.

More importantly, they look comfortable doing it.
