The Carolina Hurricanes made a big splash this afternoon by signing forward Nikolaj Ehlers to a six-year deal with an $8.5 million AAV. Ehlers was the top free agent available and waited a few days before making his decision, which ultimately became Carolina. The Hurricanes hope Ehlers can be a piece that gets them over the hump and to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Winnipeg Jets drafted Ehlers ninth overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He’s played in 674 career games, playing in all ten seasons with the Jets. Ehlers has recorded 520 points on 225 goals and 295 assists. He’s a career +106 with 111 power-play points and 39 shorthanded goals. This past season, in 69 games, he finished with 63 points on 24 goals and 39 assists. Ehlers was a +14 for the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Jets. He had 22 points on the power-play and finished with five game-winning goals. In 45 career playoff games, he has 21 points on nine goals and 12 assists. He’s is a minus-eight with six power-play points and two game-winning goals. In eight games in the playoffs this season he had seven points on five goals and two assists. Ehlers was a plus-one with two points on the power-play.
