This offseason is just as important for the young faces on Chicago Blackhawks roster as it is for the front office through the draft and free agency. The team finished 31st in the league standings this season just like they did a year ago, but this campaign was much different than the previous one. The Blackhawks collected points in their final three games to end the year and played in more competitive contests than they have in the last handful of seasons in the final five weeks.
A handful of entry-level deals were signed toward the end of the season and the team began playing much quicker because of that. Even though the Blackhawks remained the team with the lesser talent on most nights, their speed and physicality kept them in games.
It will be harder to make the roster out of camp for the fringe guys this upcoming season and that’s another positive note for fans to hear. The bottom-six forward positions will be a major battle for the younger players who recently signed their deals and the last three blue line spots won’t be easy to earn either.
One of the top defenseman in this growing core for the Blackhawks will be playing more hockey during the offseason and it’s a fantastic opportunity for him to take his game to new heights.
Alex Vlasic playing for Team USA will benefit the Chicago Blackhawks
Alex Vlasic will be a member of Team USA in the IIHF World Championship beginning on May 9. The Blackhawks’ top left-shot defenseman played in all 82 games this past season and scored four goals while adding 26 assists for 30 total points. All scoring marks for Vlasic were the most he posted in a single season, but his plus/minus rating took a hit.
Vlasic finished the campaign with a -23 plus/minus rating after posting a -4 mark in the 2023-24 season. This could be due to the Wilmette native being elevated to the top pairing for most of the year and the few tough stretches the team went through before hitting their stride in the final few weeks of the season.
The 23-year-old will get the chance to skate with some really solid best blue liners in this two week tournament, which will only help him moving forward. Vlasic signed a five year contract extension last year that will begin this upcoming year. The organization has faith in their homegrown talent and they know that he can be a big part of the next playoff team in the Windy City.
The Chicago Blackhawks could expect Alex Vlasic to become a leader
Vlasic made it known at the end of the year that he feels ready to take on a leadership role with the Blackhawks. There will be an alternate captain spot up for grabs this upcoming season, with Nick Foligno returning as the captain and Connor Murphy as the other alternate.
“I like to think I stepped up a little bit (as a leader),” Vlasic told the media. “Next year, I want to try to be a little more vocal.”
The young core that Chicago has right now is getting more comfortable at the NHL level and the guys around them. Foligno’s contract is up after next season, which could be his last as a professional. If this is the case, the Blackhawks will be looking for a new captain once again, and Vlasic could be a candidate to step in and fill those shoes.

Bruins' David Pastrnak Calls Out Canadiens' Juraj Slafkovsky: He Just Lacks Humility'
Juraj Slafkovsky is one of the most promising players in the NHL, but now he has been called out by David Pastrnak, who stated he lacks humility. After being picked No. 1 overall in 2022 NHL Draft, expectations were high in Montreal for young star Juraj Slafkovsky, and thus far, he's shown glimpses of being the elite level player many expected when he entered the National Hockey League. However, there are still some major steps to go, and in a recent interview, Boston Bruins star David Pastrnak pointed out perhaps one area where the 21-year old may need to improve moving forward. When asked about Slafkovsky and his potential, Pastrnak gave nothing but a glowing review of the young Canadiens star, but he did note that he believes Slafkovsky needs more humility. 'He's still a young player who is gaining experience in the NHL every year. This season it was already clear that he gave the team more than before...He just needs a little more humility, he should set an example for the young ones.' On the ice, there's no doubting that Slafkovsky has the presence, the size and the talent to be a true star, posting 101 total points over the past two seasons, but for whatever reason, it appears as though Pastrnak believes he needs to improve off the ice before he can take a major leap in Montreal. Ultimately, the talent is still there for Slafkovsky, and at 21-years old, he'll continue to learn off the ice, and if he can go anywhere close to living up to the potential that he's shown in his first three years at the NHL level, there's no doubt that he can be a big time star and help lead the Canadiens to significant post-season success.
Tigers Reportedly Trying to Finalize Eugenio Suárez Trade Before Diamondbacks Leave
The Detroit Tigers may not be out of it just yet in the pursuit of the top available player at this week's MLB trade deadline. Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez is sought after by just about every contender due to the incredible season he's had so far. However, many called into question how much of a fit he is for the Tigers. On paper, Suárez makes the lineup more dangerous, but many have pointed out that his presence might limit what the Tigers do best in terms of creating mismatches and having chess pieces to move around the diamond. A new report on Monday though contradicts all that, though. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported the Tigers are still very much a suitor for Suárez and want to get a deal done with the Diamondbacks before the slugger leaves town following this early-week series between the two sides. Through 104 games headed into the matchup with Detroit, Suárez is slashing .247/.319/.579 with 36 home runs and a big league-leading 87 RBI, already collecting a bWAR of 3.4. How serious of an offer they are willing to make in order to make that happen remains to be seen. Yankees Could Trade for Aaron Judge Replacement
With Aaron Judge on the mend due to an elbow injury, the New York Yankees have begun surveying the trade market for outfield help. Though the club has considerable depth at the position, that hasn't stopped them from looking for outside reinforcements. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, two players in particular New York has shown interest in are Harrison Bader of the Minnesota Twins and Austin Slater of the Chicago White Sox. Both Bader and Slater are rentals, which is notable because of the fact that Trent Grisham falls under that same umbrella while Cody Bellinger is likely to decline his player option for the 2026 campaign. Acquiring an outfielder with team control beyond this season who could start alongside Jasson Dominguez and Aaron Judge moving forward would make sense, but that wouldn't be the case with either Bader or Slater. The Yankees have reportedly been pursuing a right-handed bat beyond Amed Rosario, whom they acquired from the Washington Nationals over the weekend, and with some question marks surrouding Judge's defensive availability when he returns from the IL, Bader and Slater are still logical targets for the club despite their contract statuses. Bader is plenty familiar with the Yankees, as he was dealt to the team from the St. Louis Cardinals at the 2022 deadline in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery. He slashed .237/.274/.353 in 98 regular season games through 2023 before going on to spend time with the Twins, New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds. The 31-year-old has primarily played left field for Minnesota this season, though a majority of his big league experience has come in center field. The former Gold Glover has long profiled as one of baseball's best defenders in the outfield, and he's maintained that reputation in 2025 with five Outs Above Average (OAA). Slater has picked up expansive experience at all three outfield spots, though he's largely stuck in the corners for Chicago this season. The 32-year-old is a solid defender himself, logging one OAA, while batting .241/.307/.440 with five home runs in 128 plate appearances. His batted ball data suggests that he's due to break out, however, evidenced by an expected batting average of .280, expected slugging percentage of .537 and barrel rate of 14.6 percent, per Baseball Savant. The Yankees can't go wrong with either Bader or Slater, though it remains to be seen if they'll actually decide to add an outfielder over the next few days before the July 31 deadline. Adam Schefter says what Commanders fans dreaded about Terry McLaurin talks
Terry McLaurin is back at the facility after his contract holdout. Everyone associated with the Washington Commanders was thrilled to welcome him, but any hope around a new deal being agreed upon evaporated almost as quickly as it arrived. McLaurin is back for the fans. He's back for his teammates. He's back to avoid getting fined $50,000 per day. He's not back to mend fences or get involved too much in negotiations. That's for his representatives and general manager Adam Peters to figure out. McLaurin has a price in mind. So does Washington's front office leader, and Adam Schefter from ESPN claimed that the two sides were nowhere near some middle ground right now. Adam Schefter thinks Terry McLaurin wants more than $33 million per year on Commanders extension Schefter stated during his latest appearance on the Pat McAfee Show that the floor is probably the $33 million per year D.K. Metcalf received from the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the senior insider also thought McLaurin could be asking for a lot more. It's been vast. So it's up to the two sides to find a way to bridge their differences. But I would say that D.K. Metcalf was in the same draft class as Terry McLaurin. He got about 33 million dollars a year. I wouldn't think Terry wants to take less than that, and I think he wants considerably more than that. Now, what it comes in at, we'll wind up seeing. Washington... They're not there right now. They love and value Terry McLaurin, but they love and value him at a different price. These two sides right now seem apart on a deal. They don't seem close today, and I don't know how they're going to get that resolved and figured out.Adam Schefter This doesn't exactly fill Washington's fan base with much optimism. But, in all honesty, it's been the brutal truth since talks over a new deal began. Peters is reluctant to meet McLaurin's demands. He's almost 30 years old, and production often regresses on third NFL contracts. Although he's shown no signs of slowing down and remains among the most durable wideouts around, things are not matching up from a business sense currently. There is still time to work things out, and they typically do the closer we get to the regular season. McLaurin is on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle complication, so he's not practicing. And the former third-round pick out of Ohio State is unlikely to be on the field in any capacity until some more long-term financial security arrives.
