Chicago Blackhawks Receive Huge Connor Bedard News

Connor Bedard took another clear step toward his season debut for the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, joining the full team practice in a regular jersey for the first time this year.

The 21-year-old captain had been limited to non-contact work in a black sweater since returning to the ice earlier in the month, following surgery on his left shoulder that stemmed from an offseason training injury in July.

Removing that restriction and skating through full drills marked tangible progress in a recovery that had originally pointed toward a mid-November return.

Bedard told reporters after practice that he felt strong and was encouraged by the contact elements of the session, including battle drills and five-on-five work.

He noted that he had been off the ice for roughly two months after the procedure and that rebuilding his hands, conditioning, and overall game rhythm remained the main focus.

No firm return date has been set, though he indicated he would consult with the medical staff soon and hoped to identify a game in the near term.

Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill did not rule out the possibility of Bedard playing as early as Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins, pending the results of an upcoming medical evaluation.

Blashill has described the return of the club’s top player as a significant boost for a young roster that has struggled to generate offense.

Whenever Bedard does rejoin the lineup, it will be the first time he wears the captain’s “C” in a regular-season game.

The Blackhawks named him captain and signed him to a long-term extension after the injury delayed the start of his 2026-27 campaign, underscoring the organization’s confidence in him as the franchise centerpiece.

Through his first three NHL seasons, Bedard led Chicago in scoring each year, posting 61, 67, and 75 points respectively despite missing time in both his rookie campaign and last season.

The Blackhawks have averaged just two goals per game through their first six contests and sit tied for one of the league’s lowest scoring rates.

That production tracks closely with the team’s historical output without Bedard over the past three seasons, when Chicago averaged roughly 2.07 goals per game in his absence compared with 2.45 when he was in the lineup. Rookie Anton Frondell and Frank Nazar are currently the only Blackhawks with three or more points.

Nazar has centered a line with Roman Kantserov and Patrick Kane, while Frondell has skated between Teuvo Teravainen and Tyler Bertuzzi. Those combinations are expected to shift once Bedard is fully available, as he has often been paired with Bertuzzi and could rotate among other wingers.

Bedard’s progression from non-contact skating to full participation has compressed an originally longer timeline, and the Blackhawks appear increasingly optimistic that their captain can rejoin the group sooner rather than later.
