Cole Caufield Wins The Molson Cup for October

The Montreal Canadiens had an amazing month of October, winning 8 of their first 11 games of the season. There could have been multiple guys who had a case for winning the team’s Molson Cup Trophy for October, but it has been given to Cole Caufield, who scored 9 goals and 13 points in 11 games, including three game-winners in overtime. A ceremony will take place honouring Caufield before Saturday’s game against the Ottawa Senators.

During October, Caufield was named the 1st star of the game three times (October 14th and October 28th against the Seattle Kraken, and October 16th against the Nashville Predators), in which he scored twice in each of those games. He was named the 2nd star against the Chicago Blackhawks on October 11th, where he scored a goal and an assist. Caufield also got the 3rd star of the game against the Edmonton Oilers on October 23rd, in a 6-5 loss, where he scored 2 goals yet again.

With all that being said, Caufield finished the month being named one of the three stars during 5 of the 11 games he played in October. He also finished the month tied for the most goals in the NHL. As a result, he narrowly beat out his linemate Nick Suzuki, who is on a 10-game point streak, and Jakub Dobes, who started the season 6-0-0 with a 1.97 GAA and .930 save percentage. With as great a month as there was, there were a lot of players who could have been worthy of the honour as the team’s MVP for October.

This season, Caufield has seemingly become more clutch as a player, and it has paid off massively for the Canadiens, who lead the league in OT goals with 4. Without Caufield that wouldn’t have been possible. With his overtime winner on Tuesday, Caufield became the all-time leader in OT winners in Habs Franchise history with 11, surpassing both Max Pacioretty and Howie Morenz in the process. The fact that he’s only 24 years old and is signed up to the end of the 2030-31 season means we will likely get to see many more from the Habs sniper.

The Canadiens and Caufield will be looking to continue their success into November, which starts tonight against a rival they know very well in the Senators.

As well as the honours that Caufield had received for October, there was also Jakub Dobes, who was named 3rd star of the month in the NHL, after his perfect record that helped the Habs finish the month at the top of the Atlantic Division. Despite still being a rookie, he was not named Rookie of the Month; that honour went to New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer. Ivan Demidov could have also been in contention for the Rookie of the Month, with his 4 goals and 9 points in 11 games throughout October.

Who do you think had a better month of October, Jakub Dobes or Ivan Demidov?
