There is growing concern surrounding the future of pending RFA forward Adam Fantilli with the Columbus Blue Jackets after the latest report from general manager Don Waddell.

The Columbus Blue Jackets hope that forward Adam Fantilli is going to be a long-term solution for them, but right now, it looks like they're having some difficulty getting him to commit long-term.

Why Columbus Faces Uncertainty With Its Rising Franchise Center

Per a recent report from Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell, Fantilli and his representation aren't willing to sign a long-term extension before he's eligible to become a restricted free agent next summer and a contract won't be signed before the season begins.

We've had no negotiations at all. I spoke with (Fantilli's agent Pat) Brisson last week, and they're in no hurry from their end. It won't get done before the season.

Taken with the 3rd overall pick by the Blue Jackets in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft by the Blue Jackets, he soon signed a 3 year entry level contract.

So far in his NHL career, he has 81 points (43G, 38A) in 131 games. But he enjoyed a breakout year in 2024-25, scoring 31 goals, a new career-best while playing in all 82 games.

It's a risk on both sides, as the Blue Jackets are risking having to pay him much more if he can continue that kind of offensive production, while Fantilli is also risking a significant cut in what he could have made otherwise if last season proves to be a fluke.

The Blue Jackets still have not been to the playoffs since Fantilli was taken in 2023, and should they lose him on the open market, it would represent a significant setback for a team that has essentially just existed in the background for most of their history.
