Connor Bedard Earns Ultimate Praise: Wayne Gretzky Amazed by Rookie's 'Michigan' Goal'
Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

In an absolutely electric display of skill that captivated both fans and legends alike, Chicago Blackhawks' rookie Connor Bedard stunned the St. Louis Blues—and none other than Wayne Gretzky—with an audacious 'Michigan' goal. Bedard's 13th of the season, a blend of art and athletics performed on Saturday night's game, reaffirmed his status as a rising icon in hockey.

The goal itself, executed with incredible finesse, went immediately viral. Gretzky's presence as a commentator for the ESPN+ broadcast only heightened the moment's significance.

"I couldn't do what he did tonight," says Gretzky, echoing the sentiments of anyone who witnessed the feat.

The 'Michigan' goal, named after Mike Legg's infamous 1996 NCAA stunner, was historically a move many attempted but few mastered. Considering the timing of Bedard's impressive feat, most tuned into the game were likely gathered around with family celebrating the holiday. The term 'Michigan' quickly became something that had to be explained to those not all that familiar with what Bedard had just pulled off. If you haven't seen the original, well here you go...

Gretzky himself outright admitted that such a maneuver was absent from his own illustrious career, a high form of tribute to Bedard, whom he praised for his on-ice wizardry.

"This wasn't in my repertoire," Gretzky candidly shared with Bally St.Louis, reminiscing on his playing days.

While the Blackhawks went on to lose the game in quite embarrassing fashion, the goal will almost certainly live on highlight reels for years to come.
