New Jersey Devils goaltender Connor Hellebuyck confirmed Wednesday that personal family considerations prompted his request to be traded from the Winnipeg Jets.
In an Instagram post published November 4, the 33-year-old said the decision was "extremely difficult" and followed extensive reflection and conversations with his family. He declined to share specifics, stating they had chosen to keep those matters private and asking for respect.
The Jets traded Hellebuyck to the Devils on October 23 for forwards Dawson Mercer, Alexander Command, and Nick Bjugstad; goaltender Nico Daws; a 2027 seventh-round draft pick; and a 2029 second-round draft pick. That deal came roughly one month after Hellebuyck publicly sought a trade and after the Jets suspended him for not attending training camp.
Hellebuyck thanked Jets co-owner Mark Chipman, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, and the full organization. He also expressed appreciation to teammates, coaches, trainers, and equipment staff. To fans, he wrote, "I'll never forget the pride I felt representing Winnipeg."
The Devils are scheduled to play the Jets in Winnipeg on Tuesday. Hellebuyck is one of several U.S.-born NHL players who have requested trades from Canadian franchises to U.S.-based teams.
