Connor Hellebuyck: Honestly, How Good Is He?

So, just how good is Connor Hellebuyck? This graphic makes a pretty strong case that he belongs in the conversation with the best goalies of the past couple of decades—and it does it with a number that looks beyond wins and shutouts.

The chart below ranks goalies by WAR, or “wins above replacement.” In simple terms, it estimates how much more value a goalie provided than a replacement-level option would have. Hellebuyck is sitting at 61.9 WAR, ahead of Carey Price at 56.25, Sergei Bobrovsky at 54.09, Henrik Lundqvist at 52.86, and Marc-André Fleury at 50.21. That’s a pretty impressive group to be leading.

The interesting part is who’s right behind him. Carey Price, Henrik Lundqvist, Marc-Andre Fleury, and Roberto Luongo were all defining goalies of their time. Sergei Bobrovsky and Andrei Vasilevskiy give the list a more current feel. These aren’t random names who happened to pile up games; they’re goalies who spent years being trusted to carry a huge share of their teams’ workload. Hellebuyck being at the top says his value has stacked up exceptionally well against that kind of company.

The Chart Isn’t a Pure Comparison of Goalie vs. Goalie

There’s one important bit of context, though: this is a career-total comparison, and the seasons covered aren’t equal. Hellebuyck’s row runs from 2015–16 to 2025–26, while Price’s starts in 2007–08 and Fleury’s in 2003–04. More seasons give a goalie more chances to build up a total, so this isn’t a clean “who was best at their peak?” ranking. It’s more like, “How much value has this goalie accumulated across the seasons shown?”

That actually makes Hellebuyck’s lead stand out even more. That said, the stat still isn’t the final word. WAR depends on a model, and it can’t capture every part of goaltending or settle every debate. It’s best used as a strong clue, not a magic answer. The site itself describes WAR as a useful starting point, not a be-all and end-all.

The Bottom Line? Hellebuyck Is a Really Strong Goalie

The takeaway? Hellebuyck isn’t just having a nice run or putting up a few eye-catching seasons. By this measure, he’s already ahead of a remarkable group of modern-era greats. Whether you rank him first is up to you. But if someone says he belongs in the same conversation as Price, Lundqvist and Fleury, this graphic gives them a pretty convincing reason.
