Fondrk’s strengths

Plays a 200ft game

Fondrk is consistently good all over the ice. For the U.S. National U18 Team, he is utilized on the power play and on the penalty kill, and appears to have the awareness necessary to potentially do the same at the NHL level someday.

Playmaking

Whether he has the puck on his own stick or is trying to send it to another one, he is very good at creating chances. He can make difficult passes through traffic look easy at times and is valuable to his offence even if he isn’t the one putting the puck in the back of the net.

NHL ready build

Fondrk stands about six feet tall, weighing just under 200 pounds, which puts him about average with the rest of the league. While he may not have the flashy skating or insane production that makes many other prospects so attractive. He does have the consistency and build to suggest that he has a good shot at becoming a solid depth player on any team.

Fondrk’s areas of improvement

Lacks production

As previously mentioned, Fondrk’s offensive production is nothing impressive. He hasn’t been over a point-per-game in a season since 15U. This is concerning as for his odds at being a consistent scorer at the NHL level. As strong physically and defensively as he may be, those strengths will not be enough for him to succeed solely on his own if he can’t find ways to score at the next level.

Good at all, master of none

Fondrk is consistently good at most of the things that he is asked to do on the ice. He can defend well, score occasionally, and set up his teammates for good chances, but he can do none of those things at an elite level in his league. While being consistent at everything is good, it can also be a negative if you don’t find your niche.

Fondrk’s comparables

Conrad Fondrk has all the makings of a bottom-six, trustworthy centre who can be played in dangerous situations and used as a fill-in anywhere in the special teams when needed. While he doesn’t appear to have a very high ceiling, there is definitely an argument to be made that he is still worth picking up with a second to third-round pick, thanks to his consistent play, which gives him the appearance of being a safe pick. I’ve seen scouts compare him to Tyson Jost, and that is a pretty accurate comparison.

Fit with the Flames

He does fit a need with Calgary and could be a nice replacement for just about any of Calgary’s aging centres. He is projected to go anywhere from late in the second round to the middle of the third, so Calgary could potentially grab him with either their third-round pick. As for actual team fit, there isn’t any real reason why he wouldn’t be able to succeed in Calgary’s system. If he continues to develop well defensively, He could even fit in well in Calgary.

Summary

Conrad Fondrk is a consistent top-6 forward at the junior level who can do just about everything well but has not shown elite potential at anything specific. He has the potential to be a solid bottom-six centre in just about any system if given the chance, but lacks the finesse to suggest that he could elevate his game further than that.
