Corey Perry has had enough of losing in the Stanley Cup Final. The veteran winger has decided that it’s time to lose in the first round of the playoffs instead.
According to Bob McKenzie, by way of Chris Johnston, Perry has reached a deal with the Los Angeles Kings. It’s a one-year contract worth up to $3.5 million with performance bonuses, per Pierre LeBrun.
Earlier this month, Frank Seravalli reported that Perry’s “top priority” was to re-sign with the Edmonton Oilers. On the day before free agency opened, LeBrun reported that the Oilers had an offer on the table, but the 40-year-old was going to test the open market.
That’s a considerable raise on the $1.4 million Perry made on his one-year contract with the Oilers in 2024-25, which featured a $1.15 million base salary with $250k in games-played bonuses.
After the Oilers freed up $4 million in salary cap room by trading Viktor Arvidsson on Tuesday morning, it seemed more likely that the team would be able to make a deal work with Perry.
Instead, the winger cashed in on a very productive performance with Edmonton, scoring 19 goals and 30 points in 81 regular-season games before adding 10 goals and 14 points in 22 playoff games.
Perry joins a Kings team that’s fallen to the Oilers in the first round of the playoffs four seasons in a row. The team parted ways with general manager Rob Blake after this year’s loss to Edmonton and former Oilers GM Ken Holland stepped into the role.
Selected in the first round of the 2003 NHL Draft by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Perry has been a rival of the Kings for much of his career. Perry scored 372 goals and 776 points in 988 games with the Ducks over 14 seasons with the team.
The Ducks bought out Perry’s contract following the 2018-19 season, and he’s played for five teams since. He’s also been on the losing side of the Stanley Cup Final five times in six years — with the Dallas Stars in 2020, the Montreal Canadiens in 2021, the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2022, and the Edmonton Oilers in both 2024 and 2025.
