Corey Perry's Future in Edmonton Threatened by Oilers' Situation

Corey Perry wants to run it back with the Edmonton Oilers, but unless something changes in the next few days, the veteran winger might have to look elsewhere.

According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, Perry hopes to re-sign with the Oilers during the offseason. However, Edmonton’s cap situation is proving to be a major obstacle.

The Oilers have just $12.3 million in current cap space but six pending free agents to deal with.

“Corey Perry still hopes to re-sign in Edmonton, but the pathway to common ground on a deal has been difficult with the Oilers’ cap situation,” LeBrun reported. “It’s very possible Perry ends up on the free-agent market on Tuesday, but the door remains open with Edmonton.”

With big-money extensions for key players like defenseman Evan Bouchard looming on Edmonton's horizon, the Oilers have little flexibility.

According to Oilers insider Bob Staufffer, Perry is seeking a raise, targeting a two-year deal in the $2-2.5 million range.

"I’m hearing Perry’s looking for 2 (years) and 2.5," Stauffer said. "Given where Edmonton’s at, could they go there on Corey Perry, at 2 to $2.5M for a 40-year-old player?"

Perry played a limited role during the regular season, averaging under 12 minutes per game, but still scored 19 goals and 30 points in 81 games, then added 10 more in the playoffs.

More than his production, it's fair to assume the Oilers would value his leadership and playoff pedigree, and experience if they decide to bring him back.

“This is a good team and there are some good things ahead,” Perry said after the Stanley Cup Final loss to Florida. “Hopefully it’s here, and hopefully we can figure something out and get something done.”
