Coyotes win five in a row against recent Stanley Cup champions

The Arizona Coyotes have been on an absolute tear, having defeated their last five opponents. With a decisive 6-0 win against the Capitals on Monday, the Coyotes have now won their last five games against teams that have won the Stanley Cup in the last six seasons.

The Yotes' streak started off on Nov. 25 with a win against the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Vegas Golden Knights, followed by wins against the Tampa Bay Lightning (2020 and 2021 champs), Colorado Avalanche (2022), St. Louis Blues (2019), and Capitals (2018).

According to PHNX Sports' Craig Morgan, this is the first time that a team has recorded five consecutive victories over recent Stanley Cup-winning opposition since 1945.

The league only had the Original Six franchises back then, so it was more common to have matchups against teams that had won a Cup in the last five years. Now, in the modern era, to have the serendipity to not only get scheduled to play the previous five champions in a row, but also managing to win every game against them is nothing short of astounding.

The Coyotes' success of late is due in part to their offensive surge, outscoring their opponents 19-5 during their win streak. Michael Carcone has led the charge with five goals during the streak, leading the team with 12 tallies overall. The Coyotes' star players have also contributed to the cause with Nick Schmaltz netting four goals and one assist and Clayton Keller dishing out five assists and one goal. Adding to the mix in a major way is newcomer Alex Kerfoot, who has stepped up his game, totaling eight assists.

On the defensive side of the puck, goalie Connor Ingram has been a brick wall, making at least 30 saves in three of the five games during the Coyotes' win streak. He posted two shutouts and earned the NHL's No. 1 Star honor for the week ending on Dec. 3. In the past five games, Ingram has had a save percentage of .968 and a goals against average below 1.00, cementing his spot as the clear No. 1 choice in net for the Yotes.

The Coyotes will try and extend their streak to six games when they faceoff against the Philadelphia Flyers — who last won the Stanley Cup in 1975 — on Dec. 7.
