Craig Berube Remains Tight-Lipped As Maple Leafs Make Joseph Woll Move

The Toronto Maple Leafs made a move related to goaltender Joseph Woll on Thursday.

After starting the season on injured reserve, the Leafs have placed Woll on long-term injured reserve (LTIR), formally designating him as unavailable until at least Nov. 1 and creating over $3.6 million in cap space.

Woll began the season on injured reserve due to a personal leave of absence announced by the team exactly a month before his LTIR placement.

Since then, the 27-year-old has remained away from the club, and specific details regarding his status have not been made public.

Head coach Craig Berube was asked again for an update following practice on Thursday, but he declined to offer specifics.

“I don’t really have an update for you right now on Joe,” Berube said. “He’s doing fine. Like I said, when he’s back, he’s back.”

The Leafs received an exemption from the NHL to place Woll on LTIR, despite not meeting the standard eligibility requirement of missing 10 games and 24 calendar days. According to PuckPedia, this exception allows Toronto to bury Woll’s $3.67 million cap hit, freeing up financial flexibility.

Berube also declined to confirm whether Woll had resumed skating, and The Hockey News' Nick Barden reported his locker at the practice facility remains empty.

Woll last played in Game 7 of the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In July, he signed a three-year extension with the Maple Leafs worth $3.66 million annually through 2028.

Toronto originally cited a family matter as the reason for his leave but requested privacy on Woll’s behalf.

With Woll unavailable, Anthony Stolarz has made six starts this season, while backup Cayden Primeau has appeared once. Both are expected to split starts this weekend in back-to-back games against the Buffalo Sabres.

Toronto enters Friday’s contest in Buffalo with a 3–3–1 record and seven points in the standings, with the Sabres hosting the Maple Leafs for the first leg of their home-and-home affair.
